Metro Chernyshevskaya. The deepest station

The metro station "Chernyshevskaya" of the Kirov-Vyborg line of the St. Petersburg metro received the first passengers in the autumn of 1958. It opened on a stretch between the stations "Ploshchad Vosstaniya" and "Ploshchad Lenina" on the section of the first line of the Leningrad subway that was already operating by that time. The overpass, which is the metro station "Chernyshevskaya", entered the history of the domestic metro construction as one of the most complex and deep sections. The difficulties that met here metro-builders had to be unprecedented. And the engineering and construction experience subsequently proved invaluable for the implementation of other projects.

Metro "Chernyshevskaya" on the city map

The main difficulty in building the overpass in the direction of the right-bank part of the city was the need to overcome the water obstacle. The tunnel under the Neva was built in a caisson way, this ensured the safety of work and the reliability of the erected engineering structures. To commission the metro station "Chernyshevskaya" started only after the basic engineering task was solved - stable functioning of the entire section passing under the Neva was ensured. All the subsequent tunnels of the Leningrad subway, passing under the river bottom, were built on a similar technology. In a constructive way the metro station "Chernyshevskaya" is a pylon three-vaulted structure of deep occurrence. Until December 2011, when the Admiralteyskaya station of the Frunzensko-Primorskaya Line was commissioned, it remained the deepest station in the city. The central hall of "Chernyshevskaya" is shortened along the center line in comparison with the standard length. The architectural appearance of the station is distinguished by the severity of the lines and the laconic form. This is due to the fact that it was erected during the period known in Soviet history and culture as "Combating Architectural Excesses." Marble and granite of light gray and dark scales dominate in the decorative finishing of the interiors. The thematic concept of station design is the revolutionary struggle of nineteenth-century Russian democrats. Accordingly, the name is given by the nearby Prospekt Chernyshevsky. But the thematic content was minimized by the beginning of the struggle with excesses. His traces can be seen only in the ornamentation of decorative ventilation grilles and in the lobby, decorated with a relief portrait of Chernyshevsky.

Historical Peter, the metro station "Chernyshevskaya"

It will not be a big exaggeration to say that "Chernyshevskaya" has long become one of the original city sights. This is due to its successful location among the characteristic St. Petersburg historic quarters. They have not changed much since the nineteenth century. Indigenous Petersburgers and guests of the northern capital are very sympathetic to this area, where cafes, restaurants, cinemas and other cultural and leisure facilities are located in abundance. And the way here traditionally lies through the lobby of the metro station "Chernyshevskaya".
