Liver cancer. Treatment in Israel

The liver is located on the right side of the abdomen. It stores and absorbs nutrients. It also filters and stores blood. Liver cancer is the growth of cancer cells in the liver.

Cancer occurs when cancer cells in the body begin to chaotically share. If the cells continue to divide uncontrollably, then a cancerous tissue is formed. This is called cancer education or a tumor. The term "cancer" refers to malignant tumors. Such tumors can penetrate into nearby tissues and spread to other parts of the body.

Treatment

If liver cancer is detected , it is necessary to determine what stage it is. This will help to know whether the cancer has spread to other organs, and if so, to what extent. The only procedure used to attempt to treat liver cancer is surgery. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy can only reduce the symptoms associated with cancer. They are not considered to be able to cure liver cancer by themselves.

• Surgery - removal of a cancerous tumor and nearby tissues, and, possibly, nearby lymph nodes.

• Cryosurgery - destroys tumors by freezing them with a metal probe.

• Ethanol ablation kills cancer cells by injecting alcohol directly into the tumor.

• Radiation therapy - the use of radiation to kill cancer cells and reduce the tumor.

Radiation can be:

- External radiation therapy - the radiation is directed to the liver from a source located outside the body;

- Internal radiation therapy - radiation is located as close as possible to cancer cells. Radiation particles or compounds are delivered directly to the tumor through a special catheter, which is placed in the hepatic artery, which delivers blood to the liver;

- radiofrequency ablation - this involves using heat to destroy the tumor. To guide the probe to the tumor, apparatuses with image procedures are used.

• Chemotherapy - drugs enter the bloodstream and move around the body to mostly kill cancer cells and some healthy cells; Can be used in tablets, injections and through a catheter directly into the liver.

• Sorafenib - a new class of therapy aimed at the receptor of vascular endothelial growth factor, is used for progressive liver cancer.

• Biological therapy - the use of drugs or substances produced by the body to increase or restore the body's natural defense against cancer is also called the biological response modifier therapy.

Medical experts in Israel have developed a new way of treating patients with liver cancer. An innovative procedure allows surgeons to use electric current to remove malignant tumors from the patient's body.

The first actual implementation of the newest treatment occurred about a month ago at the Hadassah-Ein Karem hospital in Jerusalem, when surgeons applied a direct current of high-voltage electric currents to a liver tumor of 55-year-old Louis Saznovsky. "The method does not create excessive heat or cold in the body," explained Dr. MohamedFaroja, a surgeon at the Hadassah clinic, who was trained for a new procedure in a British hospital, "and therefore can be applied close to blood vessels and vital organs without harming them."

Saznovsky, who received frightening news about finding a cancer tumor in his liver last year, noted: "Since the tumor was attached to blood vessels, surgeons explained to me that it would be difficult to get to it and remove it." Without surgical intervention, there was no Another option to cure me. "

Using the only possible form of treatment, the surgeons at Hadassah used "irreversible electroporation," a procedure that only takes a few minutes while the patient is under complete anesthesia. Since Israel began using this rescue method, more than 200 of these operations have been carried out around the world.
