Leukocytes in the Smear: Causes and Treatment

At each scheduled admission a gynecologist gives a smear to the flora. In women's consultations, they do it for free, but in private clinics it is inexpensive. This analysis is necessarily taken and the treatment of the patient with complaints, as well as to monitor the effectiveness of treatment.

A gynecologist does this on an armchair when viewed with a mirror. The analysis should be done before a two-handed examination, staining the cervix with iodine solution, colposcopy and other manipulations. The result depends on how the analysis is taken. A spatula or brush is used to extract and distribute on the glass. Then it goes to the laboratory. If the glass is smeared too thick, the result will be incorrect.

One of the most important indicators of this analysis are leukocytes in the smear, which indicate the presence of inflammation. In the norm they should be no more than 15 in the field of view. However, after receiving an analysis with an increased number of white blood cells, and without any complaints, a woman should not get upset, but rather retake it. Ideally, you need to do this from another doctor. Perhaps the second smear will be good.

A competent doctor looks not only at the white blood cells in the smear, but also on other indicators. If there is inflammation, then the rods are few or no, but the cocci, on the contrary, a lot.

In addition, the appearance of the vulvar mucosa, cervix, vagina, and also the nature of secretions from the genital tract is also important. An experienced doctor can only suspect of their smell and appearance of an inflammation. Complaints of the patient before and during the inspection are important.

The results of the analysis for cytology, which is usually taken together with the smear on the flora, will also be useful. He will detect inflammation of the cervix. In addition, the analysis itself on the flora can reveal such pathogens of inflammation as trichomandas, gonococci, fungi.

So, the white blood cells in the swab of the cause:

  • STDs;
  • Colpitis;
  • Cervicitis;
  • urethritis;
  • Endometritis;
  • Adnexitis;
  • Oncology of genital organs;
  • Dysbacteriosis of the vagina or intestines.

A persistent increase in leukocytes in the analysis or the presence of other signs of inflammation requires additional research. It is mandatory to sow a microflora with an antibioticogram. It allows you to identify such pathogens as staphylococci, Escherichia coli, streptococci, determine their number and pick up the drug to which they are sensitive.

Undoubtedly pathogenic microorganisms, such as gonkoki, chlamydia, Trichomonads, are better to be looked for with DNA diagnostics. It must also be used for the detection of herpes, cytomegalovirus, HPV.

On the mycoplasma and ureaplasma, it is better to make a crop with an antibiogram. Because they can be in a woman and not cause inflammation.

Therefore, if leukocytes are found in the smear, it is impossible to prescribe immediately. It is necessary first to find out what caused the inflammation.

Moreover, leukocytes in the smear indicate the severity of the process. The more of them, the stronger the inflammation. The number of white blood cells can reach 100 in the field of vision.

However, there are situations when there is nothing to detect the infection, or the treatment is carried out, the control tests show the norm, and the white blood cells in the smear are still at a high level. Doctors believe that in this case the matter is in the dysbacteriosis of the vagina, that is, the violation of the ratio between microorganisms.

Treatment with antibiotics in this case can only do harm, because quite often they lead to such a disease. In this situation, periodic rehabilitation courses using candles, as well as restoration of the microflora of the intestine and vagina, are needed.

Thus, leukocytes in the smear above the norm are most often a sign of inflammation in the genital organs. However, sometimes this can be the result of a doctor or laboratory error. For the appointment of treatment it is necessary to identify the pathogen of inflammation with the help of additional studies. Persistently increased number of leukocytes in the absence of pathogen indicates a dysbacteriosis of the vagina and intestines. In this situation, it is necessary to restore their microflora.
