IZH-17 gun: specifications and photos

The IZH-17 gun is an example of simple and trouble-free weapons from the last century, it is still in demand among hunters.

A bit of history

For the first time, the IZH model was produced at IZHMEHe in the first years after the war, and was manufactured until 1970. There is an opinion that IZH-17 and IZH-49 were made according to the drawings brought from Germany. It was produced until the 70's, until it was replaced by other models. For all the time, about half a million copies have been produced.

IG-17 gun was very popular. The photo is shown below.

Predecessors

In 1940, a mechanical plant in Izhevsk released a gun, which was called the ZK ("Zlatoust-Kazantsev"). The weapon was single-shot and single-barreled, intended for hunting medium-sized animals. It was suitable for both amateur hunters and fishermen. It was also produced by the Zlatoust Machine-Building Plant. This gun is considered the progenitor of all IZH, because they are not too different from him with their design.

Characteristics of the IZH-17 gun

The IZH-17 gun has one barrel, one-shot, with an external trigger. Type of loading - mechanical. It is produced under the calibers from 12 to 32. The IZH 17 16 gauge gun was also produced. Now find this model and cartridges for it is quite difficult.

The length of the barrel and the weight depend on the caliber.

  • The 32 rifle has a weight of 2.4 kg. The length is 675 mm.
  • The 28th caliber has measures of 2.5 kg / 675 mm.
  • The 20th weighs 2.6 kg, and the length is also 675 mm.
  • The model for the 16th caliber with a barrel length of 730 mm weighs 2.6 kg.

The forebar and butt of the IZH-17 are made of wood, in factory versions - from birch and beech. In comparison with its predecessors, it has less weight, better balance, and improved weapon design. Also, the wear resistance of the mechanisms is higher: the guarantee shot of the IZH-17 gun is equal to eight thousand shots.
The optimal range of fire is 50 meters. With a larger cartridge power, it is possible to reach a range of up to 100 meters, but the return will be greatly increased.

Single "gift" copies of IZh-17 were also produced. Such a rifle was executed carefully and more qualitatively, the details were artistically decorated, and the butt was made of walnut or beech wood. In addition to appearance, a single specimen was more combative, and the build quality predetermined its high reliability.

Barrel and mechanism

The drilling of the barrel corresponds to the "cylinder with head" type. For the 12th caliber the size of the muzzle constriction is 0.25 mm, and for the 32th - 0.1 mm. Also this type of barrel is called a weak choke or an improved cylinder. He is not too different from the cylinder on combat qualities, but when shooting is no longer possible to use a round bullet.

The fuse does not have a gun, like the other IZ models. The lower part of the trigger has a protrusion that prevents cocking if the barrel is not locked completely. The same mechanism works in the opposite direction: when the cock is cocked open the barrel is no longer possible. The effort required for a shot is 1.5-2 kg. The role of the whisper in the mechanism carries out the trigger.

The sleeve can be used both metal and paper.

Removing the stock

There are times when it is necessary to detach the butt. The reasons can be different, from restoration and modification, to replacement. Beginners have a hitch here. First remove the back strap of the stock. To do this, you just need to unscrew the two screws. After removing the bar, you will see a hole in the butt. With a cylindrical wrench, it is necessary to unscrew the nut from the main screw, after which the butt will be removed.

Care

Like all weapons, this gun needs periodic lubrication and cleaning after firing. Since the age of any IZH-17 exceeds forty years, with improper storage, various problems due to time may appear. If the gun is not used, the mechanism can rust, and in the tree of the butt and the forearm, cracks appear. Rust is usually removed with the help of dehydrated or pure aviation kerosene. USM is soaked in kerosene for a period of at least 24 hours, then it is cleaned with cotton. Nagar after shooting is also easily cleaned with kerosene. Places, from which it was not possible to clean rust, is advised to be turned off.

Causes of cracks on the butt

The tree was and remains the most popular material for making butts, despite the fact that many new materials have appeared. Part of its popularity is due to the fact that such a butt can be easily modified for the anatomical features of the shooter. However, there are also disadvantages - low resistance in comparison with polymers.
Most often, cracks appear on the top of the neck of the IZH gun bed. Ahead is the upper shank of the receiver, it is associated with the appearance of cracks. If the end part of the groove on the neck is too tight against the shank, then as a result of operation the tree is split along the fibers. The gap may disappear as a result of natural changes in the wood due to a decrease or increase in humidity. With a large shot, the cheeks of the neck of the butt are compressed and shortened, which also leads to the disappearance of the gap. It can also be the result of the general looseness of the wood from which the butt is made.
The second common cause of cracks is an insufficiently tightened tightening screw, which attracts the butt to the receiver. In this case, the "swing" at the shank is greater, which, with a probability of one hundred percent, will cause the neck to become unusable.

How to avoid cracks

Periodic inspection of the IZ gun for the presence of a gap is guaranteed to protect the weapon from cracks in the upper part of the neck. In case the shooter detects the disappearance of the gap, it is necessary to remove the butt and cut the end of the groove. For this, a semicircular chisel of the appropriate size is suitable. It is also necessary to regularly check the tightening screw.

Sometimes cracks appear not on the cervix, which can be caused by the billet harvest. According to the rules, wood fibers should go along the butt of the butt and parallel to its lower part. In other cases, one can expect splitting.

Simplicity and reliability

Until now, shooters often choose a hunting rifle IZh-17. The price for a beginner also plays a role: sometimes you can buy these weapons for several thousand rubles. The gun refers to weapons of wide application. It, like the ZK - the precursor of all IZH, is used for hunting both amateur and commercial. Hunters love IZH-17 for its trouble-free operation and relative ease. From many you can hear that the gun does not let you down even in bad weather conditions, it perfectly serves, exceeding the guarantee shot several times and, due to the simplicity of the device, it's easy to repair.

IZH-17 has a small return, which is important, especially for novice hunters. In view of this, the model can be used for training, as well as for shooting at the stand, since more than a hundred are produced for one shots training, and after a couple of dozen times the recoil becomes significant for the shooter. The gun also withstands the high power of the cartridge, which allows to increase the range of fire. Until now, this model remains in the ranks among hunters and is an excellent budget option for a beginner.
