Automatic "Tiss": creation, device and application

The beginning of the 90s for Russia was a time of great growth of organized crime. The aggravated criminogenic situation became the impetus for the creation of special rapid reaction units (CORD), designed to strengthen the already existing police units (OMON).

For new force formations, army small arms were intended, the use of which in urban conditions threatened the lives of civilians. Especially for carrying out militia special operations by weapons designers, the OTs-11 Tiss automatic rifle was developed.

Creating weapons

The model, according to which the Tiss machine was assembled, is the standard model of AKS-74 U. Designers: V.N. Telesh and Yu.V. Lebedev in TsKIB in Tula.

The work took three years. In 1993, special units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation were equipped with the first batch of new unified weapons. Despite the high reviews from the siloviki, the Tiss machine was not taken into serial production by the Tula arms factory.

The device of the shock-trigger mechanism

Automatic "Tiss" allows you to fire both single and burst. The rate of fire reaches 800 rounds per minute. The USM design uses the energy of the propellant gases, which are discharged during the shot through a special lateral hole in the barrel. The channel is locked with a rotary bolt, which is fixed by two fences. With the help of the flag mode translator of the fire mode, the fuse function is performed. This translator is located on the right side of the receiver. After it is turned on, the trigger is locked. The slide frame receives a stroke limitation.

Tactico-technical characteristics of the unified model

• The length of the machine with an open butt is 73 cm.
• With the folded stock - 49 cm.

• The trunk is 20 cm long.
• The weight of the machine without ammunition is 2.5 kg.
• Used caliber - 9 x 39 mm.
• Ammunition SP5 and SP6 are intended for the submachine gun.
• The capacity of the machine shop is 20 munitions.
• The weapon has a range of aiming at a distance of 400 meters.

Production of receiver for OTSTS-11 "Tiss"

The AKS-74 U (design and method of manufacturing the model) was used by the developers to create a steel receiver in the creation of a unified model. In the production of barrel boxes for these machines is used a high-performance technique for stamping sheet steel. As a result, the design of the boxes in both versions does not differ from each other.

The Tiss machine and its prototype: what's in common?

• When creating weapons for the militia special forces, AKC-74U was borrowed the mechanism of automatic recharging.
• Presence of a folding frame stock and pistol grip.

How do machines differ from each other?

• Availability of open mechanical sighting devices in the "Tiss" model. The automatic device (the photo below represents the design features) possesses improved range and accuracy of shooting compared to its prototype.

• The greater compactness, in comparison with the AKS-74U, carrying out combat nutrition in the new modified automatic box-type detachable stores. In the model of weapons "Tiss" the store is designed for twenty munitions.
• The machine for police special forces is designed for shooting cartridges caliber 9 x 39 mm SP.5 and SP.6. The ammunition used by the prototype has a caliber of 5.45 x 39 mm.

Strengths and weaknesses of the new cartridge

"Tiss" was created specifically for conducting military operations in urban conditions. Often the police seizure groups had to fire in enclosed premises. As a result, when detaining criminals, the victims of ricochets became third parties.

Used in this weapon SP5 and SP6, in comparison with the sharp-nosed ammunition AKS-74U, do not ricochet, while retaining its high stopping action. This increases the accuracy of hits. Especially accurate are the ammunition of SP.5, which are considered sniper. SP.6 is armor-piercing. From a distance of 400 meters they can pierce a bulletproof vest that has a second class of protection.

The disadvantages of SP.5 and SP.6 are:

• SP.5 has a low initial speed and a large mass, which is fraught with a reduction in the range of effective shooting. Use this munition is recommended at a distance not exceeding 200 meters.
• The cartridge of SP.6 has a high cost. The idea of making cheap variants of this ammunition under the designation PAB-9 (armor-piercing automatic cartridges) proved to be unsuccessful.

The militia capture groups operating in each oblast, province and republics under the guidance of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation of the Russian Federation widely use new small arms OTs-11 "Tiss". Adapted to this unified model of AKS-74U, ammunition no longer gives ricochets and has excellent ballistic properties. This allows the soldiers of the law enforcement agencies to safely use weapons against organized crime, without putting civilians at risk.
