How to plant carrots for the winter

Carrots are one of the most popular vegetable crops in our region. Long spread about its benefits will not, because almost everyone knows that regular consumption of this vegetable in food contributes to the improvement of vision.

How to increase the yield?

Today we will talk about how to increase the yield without using tons of fertilizers and especially sophisticated agricultural technology. All this can be achieved when the farm practices the planting of carrots for the winter.

Choose the soil

If you plan to plant carrots for the winter, then it should be done only on a site that has a light and fertile enough soil. The soil must necessarily be loose enough, quickly released from the snow in the spring.

You can count on a high yield only in case of a soil with a slight alkaline or slightly acidic reaction, which contains a sufficient amount of organic substances and which is completely cleared of perennial weeds. It is possible to plant carrots under winter on former swamps (taking into account the appropriate fertilizer).

The main thing is protection from the wind!

Be sure to choose areas that are well closed from the wind. The bed should be perfectly even and wide enough, otherwise the small carrot seeds can simply be washed when the snow melts in the spring. If you live in southern and heavily arid areas, beforehand, worry about snow retention.

After what crops can you plant carrots?

It is best to plant carrots after those crops that are quite demanding on the soil. Excellent predecessors will be cabbage or potatoes. But do not expect a normal harvest if the carrot is planted under winter in the same place where this crop was grown for a couple of years. In order to avoid trouble with pests or diseases, carrots need to be returned only after three to four years.

Fertilizers and other "chemistry"

As for fertilizers, this vegetable should be planted no earlier than three to four years after manure was introduced into the soil. If you do this for the first or second year, then all the root crops will be either hollow, or they will contain a huge amount of nitrites.

Since in many regions of our country the soil is acidic, before planting carrots they must be deoxidized. On the square meter of the bed in this case a glass of ordinary wood ash is introduced, but it is better to use 350 g of chalk.

Soil disinfection

Then prepare a solution of copper sulfate (for 10 liters of water - a tablespoon of the active substance). For each square meter of the area, two liters of such a mixture are added. After this, the carrot begins to plant in autumn.

In order not to let the seeds wash out (as discussed above), they should be planted only in ridges, whose height is not less than 15-20 cm. It is best to use the ancient method when the sides of the beds are strengthened with boards. The site is harrowed and carefully leveled.

We're landing!

The depth of the grooves for planting is not less than 5 cm, the distance between them is kept within 0.2 m. After the frosts, seeds are sown in these holes, and they should be filled up with pre-prepared land, stored up to this moment at home. At the top of the bed, mulch with sawdust, the layer of which must be at least 3 cm.

By the way, what are the terms of planting carrots? Given the complete unpredictability of the climate, it is necessary to start the process after the onset of stable morning frosts.
