How to check the generator without special equipment

Of course, a complete repair of the generator is not shown to produce by oneself, but you can always provide a check. The most important component of the test will be a multimeter, or, as it is also called, a tester.

It is worth noting that this part includes 6 diodes, they are divided into 2 equal parts - positive and negative. When checking, there will be a squeak. If a squeak occurs in both cases, then you need to replace the part, since it symbolizes the fact that the bridge is punched.

Now we learn how to check the generator, namely its parts - the rotor and stator, without which its work is unthinkable. To begin, we detach the stator output from the diode bridge. Since it is a cylinder with an inner winding, it is worth first to make a visual inspection. Then take the multimeter and turn on the "resistance measurement" mode. The correct winding will tend to infinity on the scale of the device, but the readings below 50 kOhm mean fast replacement of the generator.

How to check the generator and the stator is more than understandable, but with the rotor it's a little more difficult to handle. What is this device? This is a metal rod with an internal winding of excitation, on one of its sides there are contact rings, with the help of which the brushes slide along them. Just like the stator, the rotor must be inspected after the extraction for any injuries. It is best to check the generator, learn from knowledgeable people, or go to a car repair shop, since the rotor is preferable to be inspected on specialized equipment. Brushes that are placed on this part have a certain amount of protrusion from the holder, which is not more than 5 mm. It is also worth assessing how freely they move on the holder and whether they are worn. When installing the generator in place it is necessary to do this with care and carefully check.

Do not forget about checking the bearings of the generator, because their incorrect operation can lead to serious breakdowns. When these parts wear out, there is a characteristic noise, which is clearly audible, even if you are near the car. Wear may result from improper belt tension of the generator.
