  1. Chemical.
  2. Thermal.
  3. Mechanical.

The chemical method involves the use of various substances, such as ammonia , crackles , stain. The thermal method of aging allows to achieve the effect by the action of open fire. The most common is the mechanical method. In this case, damage to the surface is applied: scratches, cracks, etc. - with subsequent treatment with paint, varnish, which enhance the effect.

When using one of these methods, you can get completely different looking furniture. At first glance, it is incomparable, although it is a manifestation of one and the same direction - decorating. Now we will tell in more detail how to grow old furniture. Masterclass, we hope, will help you master popular aging methods. But to begin with, regardless of the chosen method, you must first prepare the surface to be treated - remove the hinges of doors, decor and accessories, as well as a layer of varnish or old paint.

Chemical method

This method can be performed in several ways. Which is closer to you - choose yourself. We will offer some of the most popular options.

We use ammonia spirit

First, it is necessary to treat the surface with sandpaper. After that, you will see how a clearer tree structure appears. This can not be done, but this manipulation will strengthen the effect of antiquity. Then ammonia is applied to the wooden surface . It will cause it to darken and the appearance of a light grayish hue, which is typical for old wooden objects.

It is necessary to know that this method can make old furniture, only made of hardwood, because they contain tannic substances.

Aging with the help of the lacquer varnish and paint

The purpose of this method is to create a worn surface. First you need to determine the main color, and then choose a lighter tone to achieve the effect of the faded surface. For this purpose, you can use a bright white paint, and the color of melted milk or ivory. The main color is achieved by the method of white coloring.

First, the main color is applied to the surface to be treated. When the paint dries completely, another layer is applied, but already white. Now allow the surface to dry completely. After that, you can begin surface treatment with a fine sandpaper. This will create an effect of scuffing and the appearance of emerging spots of the lower (darker) layer of paint.

Cracks will help you to make a craking varnish. It is applied to the base, and when the surface is covered with a second coat of paint, small cracks appear on it, which are so characteristic of antique furniture. They will have a base color. To make the result more interesting, several dyes can be used for the base.

Use stain

How to grow old furniture at home in this way? First, cover the surface with stain (water-based), thereby setting the base color. Then selectively it starts to wash off with a wet sponge. The main emphasis is on the middle part of the surface, and the edges, bends, cracks leave darker.

If you want to age furniture, but in the implementation of the above manipulations, the desired result was not achieved, after the surface dries completely, grind it. On the bends and hollows, go through the brush moistened with the stain.

In the next step, apply a layer of stain on another basis (for example, alcohol, naphtha or gasoline). Then dry the treated part for twelve hours. Now you can fill the wood pores with shell soil using a brush or foam. And finally, a special wax is rubbed into the treated surface, and afterwards all is polished with a soft napkin.

Thermal method

In this case, the wooden surface is burned with a blowtorch until the knots and the textural pattern are clearly visible. This is the first stage of aging. Then remove from the surface of the deposit and using a metal brush to achieve a more relief structure.

To make the picture of the tree even more expressive, it is possible to cover the product with one layer of stain and a layer of varnish. This method requires care and accuracy, as careless use of a blowtorch can irreparably damage furniture.

You can heat furniture in a thermal way using a kerosene burner (instead of a blowtorch). In this case, the surface can be treated with a metal brush both before and after heat treatment. In the process of work, do not hold fire on some sites longer than others. It is best to do this work in the air - in the yard or on the balcony.

Mechanical method

This is the most common method by which you can age furniture. It is also the safest, and therefore most suitable for home use. It is carried out in three ways.

In the first case, the surface should be treated with a metal brush, then covered with white azure. Dry the surface well. Azure is a translucent coating. Through it, the natural structure of the tree is visible. When the coating dries completely, it must be cleaned again with a brush. As a result, you will get a bleached wooden surface, which has small scrapes.

The next option is somewhat more complicated than the first: brush removes soft wood fibers, creating a non-uniform structure, and then painting it to enhance the effect. First, the surface is treated with sandpaper, then with a metal brush, which can be replaced with a Bulgarian with the necessary nozzle. Now you can clean the plane of sawdust so that they do not interfere. At the end of this procedure, the surface acquires a contrast and relief. To emphasize and enhance beauty, it should be painted with azure in two layers. Apply a brush or roller.

After applying the azure in two to three minutes, remove excess surplus sponge, watching the relief. Once the surface has acquired the desired appearance, it is left to dry completely. Then apply a thin layer of varnish.

How artificially to age furniture for the style of Provence? Apply a thin coat of white azure under the varnish. When the surface dries, apply a finishing layer - transparent azure. This version of the furniture looks great, if the interior of the room is dominated by light colors.
