How the screen is calibrated

Many experts are of the opinion that screen calibration should be performed using a special hardware. Given the functions it performs, it is not surprising that it is called a calibrator. In addition to the device, you will also need the corresponding program, which works as follows.

To begin with, the user is asked to select the minimum and maximum level of monitor brightness that can be considered acceptable. Next, using the setup buttons, you need to fit both values to the desired value. Experiencing does not follow, as the calibration of the screen goes on as usual: the device and the program are busy fixing coincidences. Next, the user needs to set the desired color temperature.

Everything else will happen automatically. For example, the program will generate different color spots directly on the screen. The calibrator (which can be safely called a spectrophotometer and a colorimeter) will measure their colors and send them back. That is to the control program. The calibration performed on the screen is based on the fact that the specialized software, using the received data, will generate a working profile of the monitor. You just have to install it as a worker. By the way, this will also be done "on the machine".

In the event that the calibration of the laptop screen or computer is performed visually, there are no special differences from the above method.

In this case, the user will also be asked to select the maximum and minimum brightness. But this is done on the basis of special tests with white and black squares, whose visibility then improves, then worsens. Similarly, the color temperature will be selected.

In addition, the calibration of the screen, performed in this way, implies that the tuner will be requested color data. He will either have to select the standard (list attached), or enter them directly in the coordinate system (color). As you understand, very few people are capable of this. You can, in theory, look at the monitor's passport. If, of course, it is nearby.

I would like to draw attention to the following fact. If it is decided to calibrate the monitor in visual mode, the profile will be aligned by 3 points for each color channel. Even if it is possible to determine them more or less accurately, this will still not be enough.

Thus, a typical visual setup procedure includes:

• measurement of test fields;
• generation of working profile (ICC);
• save the received profile and set it as a working one.

Alternatively, you can use software that allows you to configure the profile manually. But here everything is not easy. The matter is that its deliveries are carried out together with very expensive printing equipment. Yes, and separately buy too expensive. As for free or "cracked" software, there is very little information about it. Who knows, maybe this is for the better, because in the inexperienced hands direct "editor" of the profile will do more harm than good.
