How is the bendix of a starter?

Bendix starter - this is the smallest and at the same time an important element of the design of the starter. This element was invented by the American Vincent Bendix. The main task of this mechanism is to temporarily connect the starter shaft with the flywheel ring to rotate the crankshaft.

What is he like?

This mechanism is a device with a drive gear and an overrunning clutch. Bendix on the starter is located on the helical shaft. Due to its design, this element allows the gear to leave the starter to connect to the flywheel at the moment of starting. When the mechanism rotates, the inertia of the gear assembly causes the bendix to move in a spiral. Thus, this element interacts with the engine gear ring.

After the ICE has successfully wound up, the speed of rotation of the last part increases several times and exceeds the speed of the gears of the drive, as a result of which it moves back along the screw shaft and disengages from the rim.

The drive gear with the overrunning clutch serves to ensure that the operation of the starter motor does not coincide with the engine's rotational speed. Both parts rotate synchronously, together with the armature shaft only one way. In the other they revolve freely. And this indication does not depend on the state of the anchor, which is located in such detail as a starter. Bendix on domestic cars of Volga production is a roller tool that operates on the principle of a wedge. When this device is activated, the armature turns are transferred to the outer race of the clutch. The outer casing starts to rotate in relation to the inner casing. Often the last detail remains stationary during the work of the bendix, because the gear is in connection with the flywheel of the idle engine. Under the influence of frictional force, the rollers move to a narrow part of the wedge space, thereby separating the two clips among themselves. Thus, the bendix of the starter drives the armature, while simultaneously driving the flywheel.

It should also be noted that this part has in its design a special spring retractor relay and sloping splines. They serve to ensure that the bendiks of the starter exits the connection with the flywheel wreath. These parts are mounted on the armature shaft. On them the hub goes to meet the rotation of the engine.

Vulnerable details

Like any other mechanism, the starter's bendix has its weaknesses. And they consist in the increased wear of the gears of the drive and the crown of the flywheel. When engaging, both parts are strongly impacted, therefore, as a rule, their service life is small.

Application

To date, the starter's bendix has found wide application in the automotive industry, namely in electric vehicle starters. This part is also installed on some aircraft.
