How easy and simple to recalculate milliamps in amperes and vice versa

Quite often in practice, there is a need to recalculate milliamps in amperes. Experienced electricians do not have this problem. But novice specialists of this profile may not immediately respond. Within the framework of this article, simple and accessible ways of performing this operation will be described.

Physical quantity

Ampere is a unit that quantitatively characterizes the current. Its value can be determined by direct measurements with a multimeter, tester or ammeter (direct method). The current is measured only by the sequential inclusion of a measuring device in the electrical circuit. In the second case, its value can be determined by performing calculations (indirect method). If the voltage applied to the circuit section is known, as well as its resistance, then it is enough to divide the first into the second and we will get the necessary value. In practice, amps are not often used - this is a large amount. Therefore, it is necessary to apply multiple units - micro (10 -6 ) and milli (10 -3 ). But for carrying out electrical calculations it is necessary to translate them into basic units of measurement (for example, milliamps in amperes). Consider the following example. The voltage on the circuit segment is U = 6 V, and its resistance R = 100 Ohm. We determine the strength of the current I on it according to Ohm's law:

I = U / R, (1)

Where:

  • U - voltage on the circuit segment, V;
  • R - resistance of the same section, Ohm;
  • I is the current on it, A.

As a result of the calculations, we get I = U / R = 6/100 = 0.06 A. Not a very convenient number for perception. Therefore, it is recalculated into multiple units of measurement. In this case, it is convenient to represent this value in milliamperes. To do this, the resulting value of 0.06 A is multiplied by 1000 and we get 60 mA. You can also do a reverse count - milliamps per ampere. To do this, it is enough to divide 60 mA into 1000, and we will get all the same 0,06 A. This recalculation shows how many ampere in milliamperes are 1000. Therefore, we divide or multiply by this number. If the prefix "micro" is used, then for the transition from one unit of measure to another one must be multiplied or divided by 1 000 000.

Measurement procedure

As noted earlier, ammeters, multimeters and testers are used to measure the amperage. The highest accuracy of measurements is provided by the first of them. They measure only one value and only on one scale. And this is not entirely convenient. In turn, multimeters and testers allow you to measure virtually all electrical quantities and not only in one range. Also in these devices is the ability to switch units of measurement. For example, the instrument indicates that the range is exceeded. In this case, you need to switch milliamps to amperes and at the expense of it to find out the necessary value. The main drawback of testers and multimeters is that unlike ammeters, their error is much greater. But still in practice they are often used, because it makes it easy and easy to find a malfunction and eliminate it. Another important nuance associated with these devices: if before it was necessary to break the chain, now there are testers and multimeters that allow you to measure the current in a non-contact way, that is, without connection.
