How and how to format a USB flash drive
When you use external drives, there are often situations that cause the user to resort to an operation such as formatting flash drives. Main reasons:
- harmful effect of the virus;
- the inaccessibility of some sectors due to a malfunction.
The number of virus programs is growing every day. And since on most computers the autorun is activated, which is very vulnerable, the devices connected via USB are often exposed to negative effects from malicious programs. Sometimes the effects of infection are obvious. For example, folders with information may disappear, and shortcuts appear in their place. In other cases it can be difficult to determine what caused the malfunction. For example, when the flash drive asks for formatting. After all, it can be either the result of the virus, or the result of a system failure, a port failure, or features of the selected system.
It should be taken into account that the specificity of using external storage devices in itself often becomes the reason why the user has to ask "how and how to format the USB flash drive?". This is due to the fact that the work occurs with the USB-port of high voltage, there are periodic falls and other negative mechanical influences occur.
Whatever the cause, you should know that formatting is done through standard Windows tools. Thus, there is no need to look elsewhere than format a USB flash drive or download additional software. To perform this procedure, open "My Computer" and right click on the label that indicates the disk in the system. In the opened menu, select the "Formatting" section and confirm your actions by pressing the "start" key.
Already knowing how to format a flash drive, you should consider two main points:
- file system;
- the way in which the procedure will be carried out.
The main file systems are NTFS and FAT32. It should be taken into account that FAT32 has not been calculated to transfer a file larger than 4 GB. Therefore, if the device has a large amount of memory and is supposed to work with files that exceed the specified size, then you should choose NTFS.
The method of the procedure is fast or complete. Before formatting a USB flash drive, you need to be aware of why this is done. Quick formatting affects the file location table. If necessary, you can restore the information deleted during the cleaning process. The complete irrevocable will destroy all available information.
Fast formatting is used in cases where the device starts to work slowly or there are doubts about the presence of residual files of detected viruses. Full use if the device starts to issue errors when copying and reading data.
Thus, the process of formatting is very simple, and it is quite easy to understand it. The main thing is not to forget that this procedure destroys the data, so you should be concerned about their safety in advance.
