History

Gorky Park (Rostov-on-Don) was established in 1813 on the basis of the gardens of the city head A. Yashchenko, which he transferred to the city as a gift. Originally the park consisted of several small landscaped gardens, the association occurred in 1890. From the side of Bolshaya Sadovaya Street, the park was decorated with an open platform. At the end of the 19th century, architect N. Doroshenko designed an openwork lattice for the park, which the city authorities established for everyone's pleasure.

The fountain, the work of architect V. Shpitko, appeared in the park in 1894 and has survived to this day. On the middle park terrace was arranged a swimming pool, surrounded by elegant gazebos and sculptural compositions. The lower part of the recreation area was equipped with fountains, a grotto and a pond where swans settled. Flowerbeds and lawns regularly changed their pattern, creating a fashion for flower beds on a city scale. Surprising public were decorative overseas plants - cypresses, tamariski, etc. A major reconstruction took place in the park after the revolution in 1926-1927.

Description

During the war, Gorky Park (Rostov-on-Don) suffered great destruction. Restoration was in the post-war forties and fifties. It is located in front of the entrance to the park from the side of the city administration. The famous mayor is known for his administrative talent. His concerns in the city were established a library, a stock exchange, several educational institutions were founded. On one side of the central entrance to the park is a picturesque monument to a remote merchant-peddler and his cat. The monument was installed not so long ago, but overgrown with signs and legends. It is believed that if you throw a coin in a box, then the donor is waiting for financial success, and if you stroke a cat hollow clothes, then there will be luck in the endeavors.

The park is open every day. In special honor it is on holidays, which are celebrated widely in Rostov. The main events are New Year celebrations, when Christmas trees are being established (Rostov-on-Don).
