GAZ-31029 - the legendary car

In the late 80s of the last century, the leadership of the Gorky Automotive Industry made a decision to create a new state car, as the legendary "twenty-four years old", produced over 20 years, gradually grew old and required significant changes. Thus, a new model appeared - GAZ-31029. Since that moment, the "Volga" family has been divided into two parts: high-quality (for high-ranking officials) and ordinary models for ordinary citizens. Almost every citizen of the USSR could now buy a prestigious Volga. The novelty was gradually improved in the course of production, therefore spare parts for models of different production years may differ slightly from each other.

GAZ-31029 - specifications and modifications

The same engine is installed on the machine as on model 24-10. This carburetor engine brand ZMZ-402 with a working volume of 2.5 liters and a capacity of 100 horsepower. It should be noted that this engine could work on both the 92nd and the 80th gasoline. In addition to civilian, Gorky Plant also produces other modifications of the Volga, including taxis. Such cars are distinguished by their vinyl interior, as well as the presence of a plafond on the roof. Another version was produced with gas-cylinder equipment. And in the 90s it was possible to buy a GAZ-31029 engine with a Japanese Toyota engine. But, as a rule, these were rare specimens that were not included in the batch production. There were also modifications with a hydraulic booster of the ZF brand.

During the production, Gorky engineers created two new complete sets for the Volga (model 31029-50 and 31029-51). They were also called "luxury" "Volga". Unlike conventional models, they differed in a different line of engines. They put 16-valve aggregates of carburettor type ZMZ-406.1, as well as injection ZMZ-4062.10. Transmission at them became modernized - for 5 speeds. Changes affected the suspension (it became softer) and the brake system (disc brakes on both axles instead of drum). Most often they were acquired by directors of companies and enterprises. Some "Volga" were equipped with a "Chaykovsky" rear axle. They reduced the gear ratio to 3.9. This GAZ-31029 perfectly suited for distant trips. After all, it had a smooth running and excellent speed characteristics.

For a soft suspension in the people "Volga" is called "barge". And indeed, it is not only soft, but also durable and reliable. The frequency of maintenance of the front suspension is about 70-100 thousand kilometers (almost 3 years of operation). All this time it will always be soft and comfortable. Stands shock absorbers can easily serve fifty thousand kilometers. Perhaps the only drawback of the "Volgovskaya" suspension - it's springs. After a year of operation, they simply sink. Therefore, in order to increase the service life of springs, motorists often increase them. But it should be noted one important disadvantage - the suspension becomes more rigid than the cars without such improvements.
