Functional ovarian cyst

Few know what an ovarian cyst really is. At its core is a bubble filled with liquid. What is the functional ovarian cyst and what are the consequences of its occurrence?

This name was given to this type of neoplasm due to its ability to wear a temporary (functional) character. It is formed due to minor abnormalities in the work of the ovary. The life expectancy of such a cyst is usually relatively small. It can be 1-2 months. Typically, this formation loses its shape and shrinks in size already during the onset of the next menstruation. With time, it disappears altogether. All the transformations that undergo a functional ovarian cyst can be detected only with the help of ultrasound.

When this disease is discovered, many women experience panic. Of course, there is no reason for joy, but do not worry too much about the formation of this kind of cyst. As a rule, the functional ovarian cyst, the symptoms, the treatment of which is monitored by your doctor, usually does not require surgical intervention. Moreover, such neoplasms can be even systematic. In this case, the functional ovarian cyst will require consultation of a gynecologist-endocrinologist.

The cyst is a sac formed on the surface of the ovary. His formation occurs during ovulation. The sac contains a mature egg. As a rule, it completely disappears when the oocyte leaves its limits. When the exit of the matured egg did not occur or the pouch closed after its release, it may be filled with liquid. Functional ovarian cysts differ from other formations that arise in the ovaries. The vast majority of such cysts are absolutely safe.

What caused the occurrence of this type of cyst? They arise when changes occur during the formation and release of the egg from the follicle. There are 2 types of such cysts:

- follicular (it is formed at the moment when the egg does not leave, and the sac with it is filled with liquid);

- luteal (it is formed when the formed pouch releases an egg and closes again, while filling it with a liquid).

These cysts practically do not cause symptoms, but disappear without surgical treatment. Medical treatment is required only if such a cyst begins to increase. In this case, it can bleed and burst. At this point, soreness appears in the lower abdomen (mostly on the side of the ovary with neoplasm) in the middle of the cycle and the violation of menstruation (delay or bleeding).

Functional ovarian cyst, the treatment of which can still be required, has such symptoms:

- Strong, sharp pain, often accompanied by nausea, vomiting;

- painful sensations arising during sex;

Bleeding.

Diagnosis of the functional ovarian cyst is carried out during gynecological examinations and with ultrasound of the small pelvis. After a time after finding such an education, a second examination will be required. It can be produced in a couple of months. In the event that during this time the cyst has not completely disappeared, therapeutic therapy may be needed. During its carrying out, drugs are used to relieve pain, and a simple surgery for the surgical removal of the cyst is performed. In some cases, hormonal treatment can be prescribed, consisting of taking birth control pills that suppress the process of ovulation. Such therapy is a method of preventing the formation of new functional cysts.
