Flanged Gate Valve: Varieties and Characteristics

The flanged gate valve is installed on the pipelines to ensure that the fluid supply can be quickly shut off and the medium drained subsequently. To increase the level of security, these elements are located on all sections of the network.

Description

Flanged gate acts as a stop valve and has a simple design, despite the high efficiency. It belongs to the category of shut-off domestic faucets and has a special blocking part in the center of the structure, its execution depends on the type of the valve itself. The most common were disc stop, interflange wedge and ball rotary elements.

Flanged gate valve got its name due to special flange rings, located at the edges. They are used to provide quick access to the system and the possibility of removing the device for replacement or repair work. It should be noted that the dimensions of the reciprocating flange element must correspond to the main plate. Otherwise, the connection will not have the proper quality, or it will not be possible at all.

Advantages and disadvantages

Among the main positive aspects, it is worth noting the following:

  • Ensuring the possibility of rapid repair or replacement of the device for a new one;
  • Simple design;
  • Long service life;
  • Low degree of hydraulic resistance ;
  • reliability.

The main drawback is a large mass. This leads to a high cost of elements, especially large ones, since a large amount of material is needed for their manufacture. Also worth noting fast wear of seals.

Varieties

The cast-iron flanged valve is available in various versions. Devices are divided into types of directional action - parallel and perpendicular. The latter option is stationary and moves in perpendicular relation to the main stream. Parallel devices are installed with a zero angle and do not interfere with the flow, provided that they are in the standard mode.

There is also a division of constructive features - these are the slide, ball and wedge-shaped elements. The latter are shut-off valves of a standard type. They are quite effective, they have blocking perpendicular type, but they differ in their weight.

The spherical construction has a similarity with the locking household elements of a similar kind. The most widely used devices are DM 50 due to their relatively low cost. Damper flange DN 100 has a special disk element, which covers the pipeline with a powerful spring. As a rule, it is installed on oil pipelines and gas networks.

Classification by management method:

  • Hand-held devices. Control of this type is done manually by turning a special handle or valve. Despite the need to apply significant physical effort, they do not require maintenance and rarely fail.
  • Electric drive armature. Has built-in electric motor for control. The system is locked autonomously, after pressing the button.

Working conditions

The flanged gate works in different pressure ranges, the maximum level can reach up to hundreds of units. The operating temperature is between +200 and -50 degrees. Cast iron parts are characterized by extended characteristics, in particular, work with gaseous substances can occur at +400 degrees, and the transported liquid medium can have a temperature of +270 degrees Celsius.

The clinker flange valve is made mainly of materials such as cast iron and steel. This parameter is in the device label. Any products equipped with flanges should be carefully selected according to the dimensions that are regulated by special documents. First of all, the diametrical size of the conditional pass is taken into account. If there are any inconsistencies with this criterion, the connection becomes impossible. If a flanged steel product with DN 80 or DN 50 size is used for mounting, the flange leading to the adjacent pipeline must have the same parameters. At the same time, the flanged gate valve, with a sliding spindle of which the rotational-translational movement is made when opening, can be produced in various sizes. The maximum size can reach up to 1500 mm, the smallest fitting has a diameter of 25 mm.

Scope of application

The elements DM 80 and DN 50 became most common in secondary pipelines and lateral branches of the systems. In addition, they are used on large domestic systems, tap-offs and in boiler rooms. Flanged valve 100 is much larger and installed on the main heating and water supply pipelines. Products DN 200 are used only in industrial conditions on pressure main systems, while for their installation large special bolts are used. The cost of reinforcement depends both on the dimensions and on the design features. Also, the price of the material used in the manufacture is important.

Installation

Installation of products is carried out according to the standard scheme. At the same time, the work is simplified by welding flanges to pipes or shut-off valves. Otherwise, workers would have to independently connect the valves with additional parts and weld individual elements of the pipes. This process requires large financial and time costs, and is characterized by some difficulties, the failure of which can lead to problems during operation. This is of particular importance in the industrial sphere.

With the help of a rubber sealing ring element, the tightness increases. It is installed in the channel located on the flange plate. On the front side of the plate there should be no abrasions and any other damage, otherwise there is a possibility of depressurization and breakthrough of the system. Under the condition of working with high-pressure head pressure this is fraught with serious consequences.
