Flag of Algeria: species, meaning, history

The national flag of Algeria exists not so long ago. But to know its meaning and origin will still be interesting to everyone who is interested in this African country.

Modern look

The cloth used today was adopted on July 3, 1962, when the residents gained independence from France, voting for their sovereignty in a referendum. What does the flag of Algeria look like? It is a rectangle whose length refers to the width in the proportion of three to two. The cloth is vertically divided into two parts. The one that is located near the shaft is made in a saturated green color. The second part is white. In the center, the flag of Algeria is adorned with a red crescent with a five-pointed star of the same color. Sometimes it is also supplemented with a coat of arms - on the emblem is the name of the state, written in Arabic. The center also houses the rising sun, under which the hand of Muhammad's daughter is depicted.

Value

Each symbol and color that the flag of Algeria uses has its own meaning. For example, the image of a hand from an emblem is traditional for the countries of the Maghreb region. The sun rising above it serves as a symbol of a new era in the history of the state. In the official version, the flag does not include the coat of arms, but even then it is filled with a deep meaning. For example, green symbolizes the main religion, which is practiced by virtually all residents of the state. White color is a sign of pure intentions and aspirations of citizens, as well as hopes for justice and a better future. The red crescent decorating the flag of Algeria in the center belongs to Muslim symbols. Often the same emblem can be found on other cloths throughout the region of the Middle East and North Africa. The same applies to the meaning of colors, but in each country shades are used in different combinations, which ensures uniqueness. The naval standard looks almost identical - it is complemented only by the image of two crossed anchors at the shaft, on a green field.

History of appearance

Before the government adopted the modern flag, a slightly different version was used. The cloth was also divided into two parts, but they were of different sizes. The shaft, as now, had a green strip, it was already done, and at the edge there was a white, wider one. At the intersection there was an emblem with a red crescent and a red five-pointed star, similar to that used now - the difference is only in its arrangement on the canvas.
