Facade paint for outdoor works: how to choose? Types of facade paints: technical specifications

In order to paint a new house or renovate the facade of an old one, it is not necessary to invite a team of professionals. It is enough to take several correct steps and have the appropriate tool - and the beauty of the house can be given on its own. This is designed to help exterior paint for outdoor work. How to choose it and calculate the necessary quantity, we will consider in this article.

Types of facade paints

The composition of facade paints are divided into two types: water-soluble (latex, acrylic) and based on organic solvents (oil, alkyd). Latex water is the most part, and the liquid in oil paints consists of petroleum distillates and other organic solvents. There is also a range of mineral environmentally friendly paints that are made from lime and cement.

By the type of reflective surface formed, they are divided into matte, semigloss and shiny (glossy) paints. All in its composition contain a pigment additive, plasticizers and binding fillers. Depending on the filler, water-soluble paints are divided into latex (based on acrylic resin), silicone (on silicone resins) and silicate (on "liquid glass").

In need of care not only the walls of houses, but also other elements: fences, benches, fences. For their coloring, the façade paint is also suitable . The price for it is slightly higher than for the material for internal works, because in its composition it contains more resin (for moisture resistance and durability) and more pigment (for color).

Selection of facade coatings

One of the main differences between paints for interior and exterior works is that the latter must be applied to a strictly defined type of surface.

The range of external surfaces includes materials such as lining, metal siding, wood, brick, concrete blocks, plaster and, of course, old paint. On many houses you can find a combination of these surfaces. For each such material, a certain exterior paint is required for outdoor work. How to choose it correctly? After all, the material for outdoor work should be resistant to weathering, have a long-lasting lightfastness and vapor tightness.

To avoid problems, the same paint should be applied to the old paint. But if there is no exact confidence in the type of the old layer, then it is safer to stain with an alkyd-based pigment. In the ideal case, it is necessary to remove the obsolete or damaged paint layer, sand it, sand it and coat it with a primer. Depending on the density of the paint, it is placed in one (thick) or in two layers (more liquid).

Exterior paint: technical specifications

A type Characteristics Features
Latex, acrylic Easily removed excess, durable, quickly dry, can be applied even on wet surfaces, incompatible with previous oil-based finish, elastic. They practically do not smell. Water-soluble, serve for the treatment of wood, masonry, plaster and properly primed metal surfaces. Do not dilute, with careful work you can get a uniform thin layer. Over time, do not crack. These are breathable paints that are resistant to burning out in the sun.
Oily, alkyd Very slowly dry (12 to 48 hours), smell strongly, hard to clean, but they are strong and have good adhesion, especially on whitened surfaces. Painted in one layer, cleaned with a solvent. They are created on the basis of synthetic resin, they fit well on old multi-layer alkyd coatings and chalk, they have excellent hiding power. Do not paint galvanized iron and fresh masonry. A thick consistency makes application more difficult, but this paint falls better than latex. Coverage should be protected from rain until completely dry. In direct sun, the paint burns out, it can crack over time due to oxidation.

Get any shade? Easily!

A wide variety of colors, bright colors and muted shades, gloss and dullness - the fulfillment of any desire. All this is a façade paint for outdoor work. How to choose a color for the finish, always advise sales consultants, this is done using a special palette. Such a color series is provided for each particular type of paint. In the departments for the sale of paint and varnish there are special tinting machines, which by mixing different pigments will help to get the desired shade.

How much paint do you need

The consumption of facade paint is directly affected by the size of the surface to be painted, its condition, type of coating, age. For example, siding, tiles, masonry or plastered walls may require 10-50 percent more paint than smooth flat walls. Also, a twice as big expense can happen when using airless sprayers that cover the surface in the equivalent of two layers of paint. A large expense requires paint for concrete because of the structure of the surface to be painted.

Calculation of required volume

To calculate the expense of facade paint on the house, it is necessary to calculate the area of the painted surface by multiplying the perimeter of the structure by the distance from the foundation to the cornice. Then, for each pediment, measure the distance from the cornice to the peak, multiply by the width from the middle to the wall. Obtain the number multiplied by two, and divide the result by half. For greater clarity, the diagram is shown in the figure. From the resulting total, subtract the area of the door and window openings.

If the house has edging from the siding, then to the result you need to add another 10 percent. In the case of staining the textured surface, another 20 percent is added to the flow. Well, if the wall is porous (brick or plaster), then it can absorb 50 percent more paint. A little less "take" the paint for concrete.

After calculating the required volume of material, you need to add one more bank for insurance, especially when buying in advance, because then it may not be the right shade. The remaining paint can be used for other jobs.

Gloss level selection

The time has come when the calculation is done and the exterior paint is selected. How to choose what is suitable: matte, glossy or semi-glossy?

Matte paint is widely used to cover the walls of houses. This is a porous layer that hides unevenness, so the surface must be well prepared for painting.

The choice of the ideal level of brilliance is dictated by both aesthetic and practical considerations. From an aesthetic point of view, a glossy or glossy surface causes an increased visual interest, although it is more suitable for indoor applications. On the practical side - such a coating because of its reflective ability can hide small flaws in the surface, so it can be used for finishing facades, painting doors and windows. In the care the glossy layer is much simpler than the matte layer, since it does not have a porous layer.

The third type includes coatings that combine the properties of the other two - these are semi-gloss facade paints. Customers' reviews indicate that these materials are in high demand due to their versatility.

Preparation for painting

Before painting it is necessary to remove all external elements: flower pots, boxes, furniture, lamps. What can not be removed is to be covered with a protective film. Then prepare the surface: close the cracks, sand and clean from old layers, ground. After the primer has dried, it is necessary to thoroughly mix the paint and you can start painting. For this operation, rollers (for large areas) and brushes (for corners, trim, relief and other) are used.

Price for facade paints

In the domestic market of paint and varnish coatings is very popular and is represented by a wide range of "Tikkurila" - Finnish façade paint. The price for this product is in a high price range, but the excellent quality of the material justifies it.

Paints of domestic production are about three times cheaper than imported, the price for them is very different from different vendors. But this does not mean that they are of poor quality and unworthy of attention. If you need to save, before buying, you need to read reviews and consult specialists.

In recent years the Russian paint of the trademark "Tikkurila Euro" has become popular - a safe and environmentally friendly material that is suitable for painting almost any surface. By technical characteristics, it is not inferior to that made by the Finns, but it costs a lot less.
