Do you want to update the furniture? Learn how to sew a cover on a sofa with your own hands

Today, new furniture is expensive to buy, and not always the purpose justifies the money spent on it. After all, it often happens that only the upholstery wears out, while the frame remains in perfect condition. So is it really better to throw out an absolutely whole, but slightly lost the look of a sofa, and buy a new one? Of course, when financial opportunities permit, you can do so. And if not, then you can do it differently - just sew a cover on the sofa. Even if you order a sewing master, it will cost at least three times cheaper than buying a new couch. Of course, in addition to sewing, you will have to spend money on a good cloth, but you can choose what you like, even if it is not fabric, but skin. Imagine how the transformed sofa, dressed in a new "clothes", will transform! And, in addition, do not necessarily order tailoring from someone, because it is quite real to sew the cover on the sofa with your own hands.

In fact, there is nothing particularly complicated in this, it is enough to remember the elementary skills of sewing and sewing, obtained at school in the classroom. Of course, if you are not a professional dressmaker, you will have to gain a little patience, but then you will truly be proud of what at first seemed to you beyond your strength. So where do you start?

Before sewing a cover on a sofa, it needs to be measured from all sides and to study each detail on the existing upholstery. This will allow us to better understand what elements the future cover will consist of, and what form each of them should be. In general, the simplest version of the design of the cover can serve as an old upholstery. It is neatly torn at the seams and removed: this results in a ready-made pattern, which is enough to circle, attaching it to a new cloth. But it's not always possible to tear up the upholstery, and, perhaps, you will want to sew a more original cover. Therefore, we suggest that you start with the measurements of the sofa, it can also help to correctly calculate the consumption of tissue. A little tip: in order not to spoil the already bought expensive fabric, before sewing the cover on the sofa from it, "rehearse" on old sheets or overfilled large rag pieces. You have to fully understand the scheme, varying the details and so and so. And when you finally manage to manually sweep the envelope that suits you from cheap fabric, you can safely disassemble it for "spare parts" and translate it into the one that you have prepared for the new sofa "clothes".

But even before sewing a cover on a sofa from old sheets, you will need his pattern, drawn on paper. First of all, you need to decide where the seams will be located. If the cover, according to your design, should completely repeat the upholstery of the sofa, the seams existing on it can greatly help you in the process of marking and the subsequent cut. This method will avoid mistakes. But if you have conceived a cover, completely different in style, then, in this case, you should mark the expected seam lines directly on the upholstery. You can do it with a special tailor's crayon. If there is none, a thin slice of ordinary soap will come up (a remnant that you were about to discard will fit in). In order for the new upholstery to fit snugly and not wrinkle on the armrests and the back of the folds, it will be necessary to make various darts and tucks.

On a sheet of paper, draw a cutting plan. Give each part a specific number and write down all its dimensions. Each element should be added at least 10 cm allowance for seams and darts. This stock is necessary to gradually adjust the parts to the desired size. However, you can use a simpler, but very effective way of cutting. To do this, you need to attach a large sheet of paper (the best newspaper is the one that is sold in rolls, especially for patterns) to each part, and then cut all the excess on the folds and try again. If not very guessed, the procedure can be repeated. Thus, it is possible to obtain an approximate pattern that can be used for patterning from tissue. When the blanks are ready, so to speak, the process of sewing them remains. If you are afraid to confuse the front and back parts, then before sewing the cover on the couch on the typewriter, sweep it by hand. In which case, you can always quickly tear off the incorrectly sewn part, easily pulling out the thread, and sew it as expected. After all the elements are safely swept and the future cover is approximated on the sofa, you can proceed to the machine, the final stitching.
