Decoupage on glass

In French, "decoupage" means cutting out. And in Russian - to make a "candy" of the most common improvised materials, in other words, to create a wonderful thing from the paper waste: color scraps, napkins, copies made on a copier, etc. Such an easy way of decorating various objects became very popular in Western Europe as far back as the 18th century. Then the furniture, painted by hand, was highly valued. The painting was decorated with doors in houses, decorative screens, small household items. This enthusiasm was paid tribute to Antoine Watteau, Jean-Honore Fragonard and other famous painters of the subtle century. Of course, they cost such items very expensive, so cabinetmakers who make beautiful furniture, but who can not work with a brush, replaced the hand-painted with paper cuttings that were carefully and neatly pasted so that it was impossible to distinguish them from real painting.

Nowadays, interest in handmade creativity in various forms has revived many very interesting techniques and decorating techniques, and the simplicity and accessibility of tissue technology has made it very popular. Cuttings from paper adorn furniture, dishes, mirrors, picture frames and much more. Modern craftsmen, using a wide range of available materials, make decoupage on glass and wood, on fabric and ceramics, supplementing the colorful cuttings with gold plating, relief paste, giving volume, a varnish varnish aging the product with a grid of small cracks.

Decoupage on the glass allows you to decorate with a refined decor conventional products of transparent glass. Vases, plates and glasses turn into exquisite objects, as if they came down to us from past times, or, on the contrary, created some time ago by some brave avant-gardist.

To do the glass decoupage, any object of transparent glass, patterned napkins, PVA glue, diluted with a little water, or a special adhesive for decoupage, acrylic paints, if necessary, must be made of transparent white glass matte colored acrylic lacquer to fix the work. How to do decoupage on glass? Very simple. The main thing is to do everything very carefully, this technique does not tolerate haste.

The glass object is thoroughly washed before work, and its surface is degreased with alcohol. From the napkin is cut out the pattern along the contours, the topmost layer of the napkin is removed and carefully glued with a soft brush to the glass surface with glue, while the glue is applied over the paper. On the plate, the notch is placed on the back side of the face downwards, so that the picture is clearly visible through the glass. After drying, all excess glue around the picture is washed off with a cotton swab or a cloth. If you need to change the color of the glass, its entire surface on the reverse side is covered with acrylic paints, except for the glued notch, and the cut after drying is painted from the wrong side with white acrylic, so the pattern will appear more clearly and brightly. Additional decoration with various contours or gilding can be applied from the front side of the plate, or from the underside to the application of acrylic paints. The final step is the application of a layer of protective varnish in order to protect the application and the paint layer from possible damage. In the same way, decoupage is performed on the glass of vases and glasses, but you should note that a picture pasted on the inside of a vase or glass will not allow pouring water or drinks into them. Therefore, if these items are used for their intended purpose, decoupage on glass is performed on the face without using acrylic paints.

You can do decoupage on the glass of interior doors or on the doors of the cabinet. The technique of decoupage is very well combined with painting colored contours or stained-glass paints. In a word, like any manual creativity, decoupage is a space for imagination.
