City of Manchester. From the foundation to our days

The city of Manchester (England) belongs to the largest trade-financial, industrial and transport center of Lancashire (52 cities, 2.5 million people).

Of great importance, of course, is the port function, the presence of an airport of international importance (the fourth in the world in terms of congestion) and the railway network, launched as far back as 1830.

The history of the city began in the 10th century, when capital buildings began to appear in the places of the Celtic settlement. In the Middle Ages, the city of Manchester was both a handicraft and a trading point. The very name Manchester translates as "breast-mountain" (mamm - "chest", ceaster - "mountain").

Industrial revolution in the XVIII century gave impetus to the more rapid development of the settlement. The city of Manchester quickly became the hub of the cotton industry, equal in importance and importance to London, Liverpool, Birmingham.

Today you can already talk about the centuries-old history of this pearl of England and the world. Many architectural monuments are open to visitors of the city , including such masterpieces as the cathedral (1422-1520), Athenaeum (classicism, 1837-1839), the Exchange building (1806-1809), the Neo-Gothic Town Hall and, of course, the Art Gallery with its A unique collection of the period of the XVII-XIX centuries (all galleries, museums and exhibitions more than fifty).

The other side of Manchester is represented by ultramodern areas, vibrant shopping centers, skyscrapers and business lobbies, many shops, youth clubs and restaurants (Exchange Square Square, North Quarter). Among the sports facilities that attract special attention - Old Trafford (the legendary stadium of the famous club Manchester United), cricket club and velodrome.

Appeared on the map and new attractions: the Trinity Bridge, thrown across the waters of the river Erwell and leading directly to the quarter of Salford.

Those who prefer to combine useful with pleasant, like visits to Urbis (cultural center), Manchester University and the Old Library.

The educational network covers about two hundred institutions of various formats and directions (classical schools, specialized colleges, universities, etc.), and the history of some of them has been several centuries old. City University, for example, is the largest and most popular in the United Kingdom - there are trained 37 thousand students.

Lovers of music (both modern and classical), who value excellent performance and clean, filling sound, should visit at least one of the theaters: Apollo, Opera, Palasteist, Contact.

Manchester - a city whose photographs with an enviable periodicity appear in major publications. And this is understandable: the city landscapes are really very diverse and each of them has a special, unique atmosphere. Very colorful, for example, Manchester Castle, the first mention of which refers to the year 1184. In 1912 it was described in more detail by the historian and writer Hilary Bellok (Warfare in England). In the Middle Ages, the castle was a defensive line (along with the Thames line) and was surrounded by three moats with water. Now it is already a beautiful architectural monument.

Thanks to the temperate climate, the city of Manchester can be visited at any convenient time of the year - it is quite warm winters and a relatively cool summer.
