Millionaire cities are populated areas with a population of more than one million people, there are 326 of them worldwide (50 of which are in China). In the Russian Federation there are 1,100 cities, in 15 of them more than one million inhabitants live. This list was added to Voronezh in late 2012. The significance of these settlements depends not only on the size of the population, but also on other factors: the income level of the inhabitants, the cultural and economic specifics of the neighboring regions, for which the cities with a million population represent centers of higher education, culture, transport, trade, logistics, P.

In the USSR millions of cities had privileges: the right to build a subway, the right to own other resources and public goods. But the possibility and priority of their receipt depended not only on the standards of the State Planning Committee, but also on the informal relations of the heads of regions with the central government. After the collapse of the Union, the cities with a million inhabitants are also distinguished by a special attitude of the government - inclusion in the state program of metro construction, assistance in the development of road infrastructure and other federal projects. They are large markets for neighboring territories, contribute to the inflow of investments related to the production of consumer goods, services and trade. Therefore, dealer, operator, service centers, branches and branches of banks, sales points of retail chains appeared first of all in the largest cities.

Today only Moscow (12 million inhabitants) and St. Petersburg (about 5 million inhabitants) are multimillionaire cities. The remaining thirteen largest cities have a population of less than two million people. The largest congestion of million population is in the Volga region and Siberia. In Russia there are 22 agglomerations (a cluster of settlements), in which more than a million people live. In addition to these major 15 cities, the following territorial entities are included here: Krasnodar, Saratov, Novokuznetsk, Tula-Novomoskovsk, Vladivostok, Naberezhnye Chelny, Irkutsk. Some experts refer to a million agglomeration in Bryansk, Yaroslavl, Izhevsk.
