Causes and symptoms of bursitis

Bursitis is an acute inflammation of the periarticular bag, that is, a soft sac with a fluid that serves as a kind of padding between the muscles and bones. These bags are in places of greatest mechanical pressure. The cause of such inflammation is small wounds, bruises or abrasions, as well as re-infection of the periarticular bag.

Most often this disease is exposed to people engaged in traumatic sports (cyclists, football players, etc.).

Symptoms of bursitis acute

Bursitis can be chronic and acute. Acute is accompanied by a sharp pain, which is worse when trying to move a damaged joint. Over the focus of inflammation, a swelling is formed. The pain becomes stronger at night.

The skin in the affected area significantly reddens. The temperature can reach forty degrees. Progression of inflammation often causes a purulent process in fatty tissue.

Symptoms of bursitis chronic

Acute bursitis in untimely treatment becomes chronic. The pain is not so strong, but lasting. At this stage, calcium deposits occur in the area of the synovial sac, which limits the mobility of the joint. Chronic form is often exacerbated, the amount of fluid is significantly increased. A cystic cavity may occur. The severity, shape and general course of bursitis depend on the site of its localization. It is very difficult usually bursitis of the hip joint.

Symptoms of bursitis of the hip and knee

Bursitis in this area is accompanied by quite severe burning pain. It can spread to the entire surface of the thigh. It is almost impossible to lie, when the flexion of the affected joint is hurting the pain. At night it is growing, but it also happens suddenly.

Bursitis of the knee is expressed by local fever and reddening of the skin in the affected area. There is pain, limited mobility of the joint. The shape of the knee joint increases somewhat, which is almost painless. In the infectious form of bursitis, a high temperature is noted, as well as the corresponding intoxication manifestations. If the cause of inflammation is gout, then there is an exacerbation of the initial disease.

Symptoms of elbow bursitis

It is the ulnar bag that is considered the most popular place for bursitis. This bursitis is the most frequent. Local constriction and swelling of soft tissues are observed. The cavity with fluid is easily detected by palpation. Characteristic are common signs of intoxication, as well as pain syndrome. The patient feels weakness and general malaise. Bursitis elbow differs from arthritis in that the function of the elbow joint is subjected to some violations due to pain, but the previous volume of movements is preserved. In the case of purulent exacerbation, the general condition may deteriorate significantly. In many cases, hospitalization is required.

Acute bursitis is usually treated with conservative methods. The affected joint is fixed to ensure its immobilization. Sore place is massaged with ice through a layer of tissue.
