Canvas is the basis of any embroidery

Each needlewoman, first thought about trying embroidery with a cross or beads, comes to the same question: "What materials and tools to choose for a new kind of creativity?" Of course, the same problem also arises for beginners in needlework. The simplest way out is to buy ready-made sets and get experience and knowledge directly in the process of creativity. But what if I really want to repeat a beautiful picture according to a scheme taken from a thematic magazine or a website on the Internet? To begin with it is worth studying the basics. In a literal and figurative sense, the basis of any project is the canvas.

What it is?

The canvas is a fabric with a clear structure, in which the transverse and longitudinal strings form a strict ornament in the cage. Between the cells there are holes, into which a thick needle with a blunt end easily passes. It is enough to lay two usual stitches "forward the needle" crosswise over the cell - and here's the first cross in the work already ready! The technique is very simple, but the choice of materials is a bit more complicated.

First you need to determine the desired size of the future picture. If you plan a small plot for a greeting card, it is better to choose a special perforated paper, not fabric. Kanva is the basis, ideally suited for large paintings and all kinds of household items: napkins, tablecloths, etc.

Dimensions

  • Aida-14 is the most popular type of linen for needlework. The fabric of this size is equally suitable for large patterns, and for small elegant crosses. It is not for nothing that such a canvas for embroidery was especially suited to manufacturers of ready-made sets.
  • Aida-16/18 is suitable for needlework with lots of details. As a rule, it is used by skilled workers who prefer complexity and richness of shades. The only negative - you need good vision.
  • Aida 8/11 - the two largest sizes. Such Aida is used for large-scale works like tablecloths, carpet tracks, homemade skins for diaries, etc. It is often taught to embroider children of school age.

Colour

The canvas is a universal fabric, which differs not only in size, but also in color and material. The most popular color is, of course, white; On it it is possible to arrange any plots and ornaments, using threads of all shades. Some needlewomen prefer to work exclusively on a color basis. If you chose a black canvas for the picture, do not forget to put a white canvas under it, otherwise you can make a mistake - it will turn out to be a curve, an ugly cross.

An interesting option is a canvas with a picture. There are designs on which the color or symbolic scheme is completely put, and it is necessary only to repeat it with the help of a thread and a needle. But partial schemes are more popular, assuming partial embroidery. Most often, a thread is applied to the interweaving of threads, which does not need to be sewn.

Other varieties

For the manufacture of voluminous crafts (for example, Christmas ornaments), plastic is usually taken. Plastic canvas - a canvas with a rarer weaving, serving as the basis for bulk items, rather than paintings or home textiles. Working with it is as simple as using a regular cloth.

It should be mentioned and the invoice canvas. It also serves as the basis for embroidered work, but, unlike the usual canvas, is removed after the completion of the last cross. It is used to manually decorate items of clothing, bags and other accessories that do not have uniform weaving.

Until now, it is not entirely clear whether the linen fabric can be considered a canvas . Although literary sources disagree on this issue, it can be assumed that flax is simply a cloth, whereas otherwise (with a canvas) it is assumed that there is a uniform intertwining - in a cage.

Chose the ideal option? It's time to start selecting mulina or woolen threads, hoop or machine, needles, scissors and markers!
