Can I make a knife from a drill?

Knife - a faithful companion of man for many years now. Of course, today, in most cases, people do not already have a survival issue, but the desire to provide themselves with a quality and reliable tool has not gone anywhere.

This is a knife from a drill, the process of manufacturing which we will consider today. The process is not so complicated, and with the simplest forging, almost any person who can hold a hammer can cope. Yes, it is with forging (hot). Stories about the manufacture of such knives, when unknown authors guarantee a positive result after a simple flattening of the metal, are ineffective. So, what tools will the knife from the drill give us as a result of the work?

What is required?

  • Two hammers (three to four kilograms and one kilogram).
  • Pliers (or better special forceps) without insulation or winding on the handles.
  • Vice and anvil.
  • Bulgarian and oven.

Test the drill bit

If you are a bit versed in metallurgy and are interested in mechanical engineering, you probably know that the drills made of high-quality alloy steel are manufactured only by the working surface. The shank is made of ordinary alloys.

To determine the boundary between them as accurately as possible, you can try to grind the instrument slightly. At the location of ordinary steel, a bright sheaf of yellow-red sparks will appear, while the doped sections will respond with a thin layer of blue-blue hues.

We work

Immediately warn: making a knife from a drill, some operations must be performed as quickly as possible, otherwise you can spoil the workpiece!

First, the raw material is laid in the furnace and brought to a temperature of over 1000 degrees. Let's notice, that at such heat it even on a sunny day will be dark. To inflate the hearth, you can use even an old vacuum cleaner.

After that, the workpiece is pulled out with forceps, quickly (!) Clamped its shank in a vice, then they take the top with a wrench, actively spinning the drill to the state of a relatively flat metal plate. This is not a knife from the drill, but its initial preparation. The result of all the further work depends on its quality, and so try not to be mistaken!

Forging

Further - it is easier. Taking the future knife from the drill with the same forceps, fast and accurate movements, we begin to forge it along the entire length. As a result, you should have on your hands a strip of metal, the thickness of which will be about five millimeters.

Important! Once the metal starts to acquire the color of the cherry, quickly put it back into the oven. The fact is that at this temperature it is easy to split the workpiece, since the material loses its plasticity.

Further manufacture of the knife from the drill involves the shaping of the blade. The job is to pull out the desired edge of the workpiece with neat, but rapid movements, without failing to keep its thickness.

Once again, heating the workpiece to the desired temperature, we begin to forge the blade. Here, then, you will need a kilogram hammer, which we mentioned at the very beginning of his narrative. To do this, apply accurate and not too strong strokes from the middle of the plate, making the blade thin and narrow.

After that, the shank is forged. Then it all depends on your preferences. Since it is not the first time to make a knife from a drill, despair in case of failure is not worth it!
