Botanical Garden of Moscow State University on Vorobyovy Gory. Description, excursions

The Botanical Garden of the Moscow State University has two branches: one on the Vorobyovy Gory, the other - "Aptekarsky Garden" - on Prospekt Mira. The latter was formerly the main and only and existed as far back as the 18th century. On the Sparrow Hills in Soviet times, more than half a century ago, a new one was created.

Botanical Garden on the Sparrow Hills

The Botanical Garden of the Moscow State University on Vorobyovy Gory is a new and now the main territory of the university botanical garden. It was laid in 1951. The new bot sail of the Moscow State University was founded at the same time, when the construction of new buildings of the Moscow State University was conducted . Its territory is located just near the training complex.

When MSU Botso on the Vorobyovy Gory just started to equip, it was divided into several sectors: taxonomy and geography of plants, flora and protection of the gene pool, dendrology, garden plants. Material for it was collected from different places in the USSR and other corners of the planet, such as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pamir, the Far East, Japan, North America and others.

Alpinarium

The Botanical Garden of the Moscow State University on Vorobyovy Gory has many different collections of plants. Central and honorable place among them is the rock artillery-an artificially created imitation of mountain systems. These are small slides on an area of 1 hectare planted with various plants. In total, there are about 700 species. The rock garden was built in the 50's, it is considered a standard in the garden and park art. There are many expositions: "Far East", "Western Europe", "Carpathians", "Crimea", "Caucasus", "Central Asia", "Mediterranean", as well as "Polar Exposition". In the center there is a small lake, near the rock, towering 6 meters above the water. One side of the rock is covered with a Cossack juniper. In the Central Asian exposition in late spring and early summer you can see flowering wild peonies, tulips, youths, bulbs. On the hill dedicated to the Caucasus, you can see a beautiful pink blossom of Georgian almonds, delicate violet flowers of broad-leaved kermek. Admire the yellowish flowers of the peaks of Mlokosevich and other species of this plant or the bright scarlet poppy oriental. At the exposition representing mountain Siberia, you can see a bright orange Siberian bathing-place, popularly called "lights". Fir-trees and pines growing in the Siberian taiga are also found here. The bright pink flowers of the Daursky rhododendron enchant the eye , which cover the Altai Mountains in spring and are called the Maralnik. On the site devoted to the Far East, you can see many woody plants characteristic of this part of Russia. The Kuril bamboo looks unusual. On one of the slides, where once the polar-alpine plants grew, now there is one of the typical species from North America.

And one of the most beautiful places in the garden is a pond that mimics a mountain lake. Here, from the beginning of summer, different types of water lilies bloom, ranging from pure white to dark pink.

Arboretum

The Botanical Garden of the Moscow State University on Vorobyovy Gory has, moreover, a huge collection of woody plants. It occupies the largest area. Its area is 10 hectares. Plants are placed in it on a geographical basis. At creation it was supposed that the person, getting here, as though passes on different natural zones on our planet. Alya walks the arboretum from north to south. One half is devoted to Asia, the other to Europe and America. Here you can see coniferous, mixed, deciduous and scaffolding of mountainous terrain. Basically collections are collected from the temperate regions, since they are able to grow in conditions of open ground. These are arboreal plants that grow throughout the former Soviet Union. From the foreign countries, North American and Japanese species took root here.

Excursions

The Botanical Garden of the Moscow State University on Vorobyovy Gory holds many excursions. On the official site, you can choose excursions for both group and individual visits. There is also a specific timetable, with the help of which you can find out at what time to come and which particular exposition you can get at the same time. The tour is conducted in all weather conditions, and even if only one visitor comes. The total cost is 300 rubles. A little less for schoolchildren, students and other benefits recipients - 200. If with the curator, the full ticket will cost 600 rubles. This tour lasts 2 hours.

There are two types of excursions: overview and thematic. The first one involves viewing the most beautiful sights of the garden, such as a rock garden, an arboretum or a collection of ornamental plants. The thematic excursion assumes the choice of one exposition.

"Aptekarsky vegetable garden"

The oldest botanical garden of Moscow State University is called "Aptekarsky garden", it was created in 1706, still by the decree of Emperor Peter the Great and is located on the Avenue of the World. In greenhouses grow plants of tropical and subtropical latitudes. Plants are collected from all over the world. Here you can see majestic palms and fantastic orchids, lots of cacti and lianas. The reconstruction of the greenhouses began in the late 20th century. It is still necessary today, as the MSU and its buildings are in a deplorable condition.
