Barium chloride

The barium chloride salt is a substance belonging to the group of binary inorganic compounds. The chemical formula of this salt is BaCl2, the name barium chloride is often used in the literature. Under normal conditions, barium chloride has the following physico-chemical properties. It is crystals of rhombic form, colorless in appearance, which can partially dissolve in alcoholic solutions and do not dissolve completely in ethers. When combined with water, a barium chloride dihydrate compound is formed, which in appearance is a single crystal that does not have a color. Chloride barium is not flammable, resistant to detonation and fire, very toxic.

When handling this substance, strict precautions should be observed. When barium chloride enters the human body or when it comes into contact with this substance, serious brain diseases are triggered, irreversible liver changes may occur, and spleen sclerosis may occur. If the inside of the body gets the dust of chloride barium, then the lungs and bronchi are affected. And if a substance enters the gastrointestinal tract, serious poisoning can occur, leading to paralysis and even loss of vision.

In the event that the powder or crystals of the substance have scattered, it is necessary to immediately take precautions that can neutralize or minimize the occurrence of severe consequences. The spillage site should be immediately isolated, for this you can apply ordinary sand. In no case should not be allowed to get on this substance of water, this can further exacerbate the situation.

Despite such a high toxicity of the compound, the use of barium chloride takes place in a wide variety of human activities.

In educational practice, the substance is used to recognize acids and other substances. So, for example, sulfuric acid and barium chloride react with a white precipitate, which is barium sulfate, by the formation of which it is concluded that sulfuric acid was originally used for us.

You can give another example. So, if you mix ammonium sulfate and barium chloride in the solution, you can also see the precipitation of white color, which indicates that sulfate was also produced.

The use of technical barium chloride is common in many branches of chemical production. For example, the use of this compound makes it possible to obtain various preparations and pigments, including such common ones as cassel greens and barite yellow pigment. In addition, barium chloride is also used to produce other barium salts.

Barium chloride is also used in the electrical industry as an electrolytic additive, which provides the production of ultra-pure aluminum and magnesium.

In metal working this substance is irreplaceable at hardening of working surfaces of metal-cutting machine tools and units. Barium chloride is also used as an additive to improve the process of melt of alkaline earth metals. The processes associated with heat treatment and pressing of metals, cyanidation of various parts of metal products and aggregates, are not without the considered connection.

In powder form, barium chloride acts as one of the components of ceramics, and in the leather industry finds its application in skin lightening and weighting operations.

Agricultural production uses barium chloride as a means to combat the meadow moth, beet weevil and some other pests.
