Cathedral

The Abo Castle

The city, whose sights are familiar with ancient history, is incredibly proud of the Abo castle, originally served for military purposes. It appeared in the XIII century, it was then that military camps were built.

The main fort of the Finns during the Swedish rule controlled an important strategic point, and in the Renaissance turned into a temporary residence for the monarchs of Sweden. But the most famous medieval defensive structure acquired during the reign of Duke Juhan III, who madly loved his Polish wife. As a result of political intrigues, the couple were sent to prison at the castle, and after the palace coup the couple sat on the Swedish throne. And to this day in honor of the Duke and his wife held colorful theatrical performances.

In the XIX century, the authorities decided to create a historical museum on the territory of the castle in Turku (Finland). The sights, which represent a whole architectural complex, are open for visits on all days, except Sundays.
