Attitude of Molchalin to service. Comedy "Woe from Wit": the image of Molchalin

"Woe from Wit" is an immortal comedy by A. S. Griboedov. In it, he truthfully and mercilessly depicted a "picture of the mores" of his contemporary aristocratic society. According to the author, in his work "25 fools for one sensible person." And one of them in the play is Alexei Stepanovich Molchalin. Characterization of this character will be devoted to our article.

The place of the hero in comedy

MOLCHALIN in "Woe from Wit" is a typical representative of Famusov's society. The role that the author assigns to him in comedy is of utmost importance. He, along with the main character, is a participant in both love and social-ideological opposition of the characters. Alexei Stepanovich - not only a worthy successor to Famusov in business, but also a successful contender Chatsky in love. It was for an unknown reason that Sofia chose him. Personal relationships of heroes in "Woe from Wit" are important, but more interesting for studying is the attitude of Molchalin to the service. It is in this activity that the character of Alexei Stepanovich manifests itself most clearly.

General characteristics of the hero

Alexei Stepanovich holds a small position. He is the secretary and confidant of Famusov. Molchalin can not boast of a noble lineage, but struggles to break out "into people." To this end, he chose an unmistakable tactic: "please everyone ... without confiscation." Alexei Stepanovich does not distinguish between the master and his servant. With all of them he is impeccably courteous and polite. With respect to the superior, Mochalina's devotion has no limits. He fawns before Famusov, strives to serve Chlestov. Alexei Stepanovich - mediocrity, unscrupulous hypocrite and sycophant. But none of the Famous Guard does not notice this. The image of Molchalin is a portrait of a man who, with the help of simple tricks and tricks, makes his way to higher society.

Molchalin and Chatsky

If the majority of representatives of the Famous Guard (Famusov, Khlestov) are people of the older generation, Molchalin is almost the same age as Chatsky. However, these representatives of one generation are, in fact, completely different people. Their behavior in society, moral principles, life ideals are opposite. This is evidenced by the attitude of Molchalin to the service. According to the hero's own admission, he has only two talents - "moderation and accuracy". He does not hide his own mediocrity, even on the contrary, he is proud of it.

The conduct and ideology of Alexei Stepanovich is strictly regulated by the position he holds. Since she is still very small, he has to be helpful and modest. MOLCHALIN can not do without influential patrons and entirely depends on them. The independence of Chatsky seems to Alexei Stepanovich obvious stupidity.

MOLCHALIN AND FAMUSOV

Unfounded with special abilities, Alexei Stepanovich very organically fits into the conservative FAMUS society. Despite the huge difference in social standing and age, he has much in common with the famous Moscow "ace." The attitude of MOLCHALIN to the service is absolutely "FAMUSOV". He admits that he dreams "and take awards, and have fun." In his arsenal there are already "three awards" and each of which is a small step on the way to a brilliant career. Like Famusov, Alexei Stepanovich piously honors public opinion. Some of Molchalin's quotes: "Ah, evil tongues are more terrible than a pistol" and "In my summer should not dare / I have my judgment" correspond with the final phrase of FAMUSOV: "Oh, my God, what will it say?" / Princess Marya Alexeyevna! ".

MOLCHALIN IN LOVE

Alexei Stepanovich skillfully pretends to be in love with the main character of the play. And here he manifests his desire to "please all people without a penalty." Clever and selfless, Sophia does not notice the deception at all. She extols his shyness, respectfulness and timidity. Even the absence in him of "this mind ... which is swift, brilliant ..." seems to her a positive quality. Describing Chatsky his lover, the girl does not notice how, according to IA Goncharov, "the portrait goes out." Sophia has her own sorrow from her mind. Molchalin becomes for her the hero of a love story, in which she plays the role of a good patroness.

However, Alexei Stepanovich has completely different propensities. Liza likes him much more alive and cheerful. In addition, he is not so stupid and believes that Sofia "I loved Chatsky once / will stop loving me like him." But to Liza he is ready to give a toilet to the intricate work and believes that this is enough to win love. The sober cynicism of Molchalin seems particularly disgusting against the background of sincere feelings, which is felt in relation to Sophia Chatsky.

Further fate of MOLCHALIN

Loss of love of the main character does not mean for Alexei Stepanovich complete defeat. Despite the fact that he committed a serious oversight, he managed to avoid the wrath of Famusov. All his indignation the "noble" father of the family splashed out on the humiliated and insulted Sophia and the innocent Chatsky. The protagonist is exposed for the threshold, blaming for alleged depravity. Sophia is threatened with deportation for her unworthy behavior in the village. Only Alexei Stepanovich removed unnoticed. Concerning the fate of this hero does not give a definite answer comedy "Woe from Wit". Molchalin, probably, will be able to pretend to be a victim of the circumstances. It is impossible to stop his career. It was quite right Chatsky, when he predicted that Alexei Stepanovich "will reach the degrees known." The final scene of the comedy once again confirmed the sad truth that AS Griboyedov is trying to convey to his readers: "The Molchalins are blissful in the world," while the sincere and clever Chatsky become outcasts in society.

The image of Molchalin: a characteristic of famous writers

The image of the "wordless" person, gradually piercing his way up the career ladder, did not leave anyone indifferent. Belinsky in the middle of the 19th century wrote that MOLCHALIN is a person who "fits without benefits" according to a single "command of the soul". NV Gogol found that the "face" of Alexei Stepanovich "accurately grasped." This is the image of a person low and silent, quietly breaking into people. Saltykov-Shchedrin's attitude to the service of Molchalin inspired the creation of a series of essays titled "In a medium of moderate and neat." IA Goncharov in the sketch "Millions of Tears" noted that in his time (1871) the silent adulation became archaism and "hides ... into the darkness". However, comparing different people with the wordless and obliging character "Woe from Wit" is still actively used in journalism.

Conclusion

Quotes of Molchalin - a reflection of his life position. The desire to come in handy and enter into the confidence of the right person who: "Feeds and water," and maybe "will give a rank ..." is relevant at all times. Alexei Stepanovich - a typical opportunist, unencumbered by a creative and creative beginning, but in abundance endowed with practical estimates and worldly minds. It is absolutely impossible to fight against him. In any situation, this person will be able to be afloat. Until when will silent mediocrity be valued in the service, and a bright, living and independent mind will be subjected to unfair persecution? Such a question poses A.S. Griboedov in the satirical comedy "Woe from Wit". Molchalins occupy leading positions, penetrate into all spheres of life, are introduced into any society and by their own existence hamper its development. However, the answer to this question has not been found to this day. Perhaps in time this situation will change.
