How it all began?

For the first time the idea of creating an anthropoid robot came to the developers of the Japanese company Honda. The ASIMO robot was created as a helper for humans, and the first prototype of modern ASIMO appeared in the 1980s. After the company Honda has proven itself in the automotive market and has taken a leading position, she drew attention to the still uncharted area of activity - the creation of an anthropoid robot-an android that would move on two legs.

The main idea was not to create a simple machine, but to reproduce a mechanism capable of thinking, performing simple actions and helping people.

History of creation

Scientists suggested that for a normal interaction with a human robot should be able not only to move independently on a flat surface, but also to use the ladder and not lose stability in a wider range of conditions. Therefore, its shape is humanoid, which helps to master the technology of walking perfectly.

20 years ago, the creation of such a robot was a complex and time-consuming task, but the company Honda managed to cope with it. In 1986, the first model of the ASIMO robot was presented. He could walk, however, only on a level surface and slowly enough (1 step with a stop for 5 seconds). To improve speed, scientists have specially developed the technology of "dynamic walking". And in December 2004, there was an innovative breakthrough in the company Honda - the robot ASIMO (photo of which can be seen in the article) began to run. Already in 2011, the updated version of the robot was equipped with the world's first technology of autonomous behavior control.

Specifications

If you compare the features of the ASIMO 2000 robot and the latest model, it is impossible not to notice a striking breakthrough. In 2000 there was a sample weighing 52 kilograms. His height was 120 cm, and width - 45 cm. He walked at a speed of 1.6 km / h. He could not run. Worked from a nickel-hydride battery for about 30 minutes. The degrees of freedom, that is, the set of independent trajectories of displacements, was 26.

The latter model has significant differences. Its weight became less by 2 kilograms, while the growth increased by 10 centimeters. The speed of walking was almost 3 km (2.7 km) / h. The robot of 2014 can run, while developing a speed of 7 km / h. Has 57 degrees of freedom and can work more than an hour without recharging.

Functionality

The ASMO robot has a wide range of various functions:

  • Recognition of objects . Thanks to the built-in video camera, the robot can monitor the moving objects that surround it.
  • He understands gestures. The latter model correctly interprets gestures. Can shake hands in greeting or say goodbye.
  • Recognizes the environment. The robot moves safely for itself and others. He understands what a step is, and does not fall from it, also effortlessly bypasses the person who stopped at his path.
  • Works with sounds. The head and body of the robot built 8 microphones connected to the HARK system. It can recognize sounds with an accuracy of 80%. Moreover, ASIMO is able to recognize three streams of speech, that is, to understand what three people are talking about at the same time (by the way, this ability is not available to every person). The robot easily determines where the sound came from, distinguishes voices, separating human speech from other sources of noise. Another robot responds to its name, turns its head toward the other person, and also reacts to sounds that carry alarm or danger.
  • Recognition of appearance. Among other things, the robot can recognize familiar faces. Now he is able to recognize about 15 persons, but as soon as he recognizes a person, he immediately appeals to him by name.

Business question

The Japanese ASIMO robot can connect to the local network. He is able to inform the owner about the visitors and see them off to him directly. However, such an indispensable assistant is not yet available. For the period of 2009 there were only 100 robots. The cost of production of each ASIMO is about 1 million dollars.

Each robot is a tedious manual work, and while the company Honda does not set a goal to mass produce androids on the market. But such a handsome man can be rented. The cost of 30-day use is 14 thousand dollars.

Best Assistant

Today ASIMO is able to carry and submit things, push the cart in the supermarket, serve drinks (in particular, can make tea independently) and open the door. The robot is perfectly balanced, so do not worry that it will spill something or beat it, not bringing it to its destination. Light indicators, mounted in the "chest", will always remind you of the condition of the assistant and how much it can still work. The robot is controlled via a portable controller.
