Ascension-Theodosius Church (Perm): description and history

The whole earth is strewn with orthodox shrines of the Russian land, and here one of them, in style very strongly resembling the red brick Kremlin in Moscow, is the Ascension-Theodosius Church, built before the revolution in Perm. But initially it was the Church of the Ascension of the Lord (or Voznesenskaya), and still popularly called "merchant", but today more known as Theodosius. In 1991, it was returned to the believers, and today it belongs to the Perm diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church. But before we begin its description, it is necessary to mention the history of the creation of the city of Perm, which is surprising enough.

City

In 1720, by the order of Peter I, the manager of state-owned factories, V. N. Tatishchev (Russian historian), went to the Siberian province to find a place and put a smelting plant there. He chose him near the village of Yegoshihi. A year later Tatishchev was recalled, and General G. Wilhelm took up this business, which approved the project of his predecessor and started construction. The day of the founding of Perm was the official date of the plant's foundation (May 4, 1723), at which Tatishchev himself was present.

In 1780, Catherine II, who bore the title of Princess of Perm, signed a decree on the creation of the provincial city of Perm on the basis of the Egoshihinsky plant, considering him to be the center of Perm governorship.

In 1902, from the spiritual consistory, a book of records was issued to the committee for the construction of a new church, in which the entire list of necessary monetary amounts was posted. At that time, large sums were donated for this case, some townspeople signed whole wills in the amount of 30 to 200 rubles.

And in the middle of May, 1903, a charter was received for the laying of a new church, signed by the bishop of Perm and Solikamsk, John. But first they were looking for a place for its construction and quickly found, or rather, it was donated by the merchant Babalov Alexander Pavlovich. A year later the new Ascension-Theodosius Church adorned the central square of the city. In 1904, the throne of its lower floor was consecrated in the name of St. Prp. Seraphim of Sarov.

Split

From 1904 to 1918, the theologian Stefan Mihajlovich served as rector in this church. The Ascension-Theodosius Church at the time of its administration became one of the largest and richest in Perm. The income was more than 8,000 rubles. But when the Bolsheviks seized power, the irreparable happened: there was a split in the community, as a result of which two groups emerged, the Sergievites and the Grigorievites. "Grigoryevstvo, which in every way supported the OGPU, became a schismatic movement in the ROC, which existed from 1925 to 1940. Thus, the OGPU conducted a special operation to weaken the Holy Orthodox Church. This movement was headed by the Archbishop of Yekaterinburg Grigory (Yatskovsky), after whose name the name also turned out. About 55 bishops participated in this split, half of which were canonical ordinations.

Fight

In 1927, the town hall was attended by church members demanding the registration of a new community. The Ascension-Theodosius Church in Perm was in the hands of the "Grigorievites", but the second part of the parishioners, because of their convictions, refused to attend the church. Therefore, in 1928 it was decided to transfer the building to a more reliable "Sergievsky" community. Then the "Grigorievs" began to ask the authorities to return the church, but they were refused. However, the Sergeevites were not happy for their victory too, since in 1930 the building was confiscated from them, and then they hosted the hostel, then - a bakery, commissioned in 1935.

In a few decades, in the 70s, the authorities drew attention to this building, which decided to withdraw the bakery, make a restoration and organize an organ room there. But the restoration was delayed for a long time.

And only by 1991 the Ascension-Theodosius Church was again returned to the believers of the ROC. Restored in 1996, it was sanctified by Patriarch Alexy II himself. Above the central entrance of the temple, a bas-relief with the image of the Savior was established. In 2004 the church was supplemented with architectural illumination.

The Ascension-Theodosius Church in the architectural ensemble is a mix of dissimilar styles and is remarkable as a multi-shell building - one of seven in Russia, along with the Assumption Church in Moscow in Putinki, the Three-Upper Marvel in Uglich, the Odigitrievsky in Vyazma, the temple in the Svirsky monasteries, the Assumption Cathedral in Kemi And a temple in the village of Nenox of the Arkhangelsk region. The appearance of this church is one of the most notable and famous in Perm.
