AGM Battery Features and Benefits

A modern battery is capable of providing the car with a rated starting current for scrolling engine assemblies at any time of the year. Moreover, its charge is quite enough for long-term operation of speakers, televisions, connected to power from the cigarette lighter, and even huge subwoofers. One of these batteries, which manages most modern cars, is the AGM-battery. Today we will talk about it.

History of occurrence

For the first time, the AGM battery was developed in the 80s of the last century by the engineers of the world's Johnson Controls Inc. In due time this firm was the leader on manufacture of storage batteries. It was she who first proposed the revolutionary technology of creation of launching devices - Absorptive Glass Mat. Literally this phrase is translated as "absorbing fiberglass."

In practice, it was tested on military vehicles, after which, from 1985 to this day, a non-serviced AGM battery is serially produced in the world. By the way, he found application not only on cars and trucks, but also on many military fighters.

What are the differences?

Externally, this device is no different from standard car batteries. The housing is plastic, with two positive and negative polarity terminals located parallel to each other. Their main difference lies in the composition. Under the housing, the AGM battery contains a series of lead plates filled with microporous fiberglass-based material. The latter acts as a sponge that binds the electrolyte. Due to its properties, the microporous material absorbs and retains it, while preventing it from flowing. In this case, the "sponge" is able to hold the electrolyte in any position, regardless of the current location of the battery. The layers of microporous material and the plate of electrodes are located along the entire perimeter of the battery case, thereby filling all of its space. Their arrangement looks like a large puff cake - lead elements are constantly alternating with fiberglass.

Benefits of using

What gives us this characteristic arrangement of plates and microporous material? First, it's safety, because such a battery eliminates the possibility of harmful chemical fumes. Secondly, AGM-battery is durable. Due to the low discharge threshold and the resistance to the recharge cycle, its lead plates and electrolyte are less exposed to wear. Thirdly, this battery is very resistant to operation in harsh conditions with constant temperature changes and moisture concentration.

How do I charge an AGM battery?

It's very easy to charge such a battery. To do this, you need to have the appropriate tool (charger for AGM-batteries) and a constant current source of 220 volts. After connecting the terminals in about 18-20 hours, your battery is fully charged. This is signaled by a green light bulb on the body of the device.
