Absorption is the consecutive application of transparent layers of paint with the condition of mandatory drying of the previous one. The task of this method of work is to obtain complex color shades by optically mixing "pure" colors superimposed one on another. It is important to dry the first layer well before starting to work with the second one, so that there is no mechanical mixing of the shades. Otherwise, you can get a dirty, ugly color, but not the same transparency effect that you expected to get. The same applies to the number of layers. They do not do too much. Depending on the materials used, no more than five per area are applied. If you overdo it, you can, again, get a dirty color instead of the desired transparent picturesque effect of lightness of objects.

Principle of operation

The main thing is to remember that the glaze is the application of transparent layers of paint, that is, any pigment should be diluted with water or other suitable composition. Colors for the application are usually used spectral, that is not mixed, and those that you already have in the set of colors. For example, to get greenish tones, the background is first covered with yellow in one or more layers, depending on the required color intensity, and then the blue color is similarly used. Optical mixing of the yellow and red layers gives shades of orange. It is worth remembering that the first is better to impose a lighter layer, for example first yellow, and on it - blue.

Materials for work

So, you understand what a glaze is. The paints that you use for work should be diluted to a clear state. Typically, for these purposes, watercolor is used, which is easily brought with water to the desired concentration. Also use oil paints, and even acrylic. In the latter case, it is better to use a special formulation to impart transparency. When working with oil paints, use a solvent or similar liquids.

As a basis for applying glaze, you can choose paper, primed canvas, fiberboard, wood and other blanks for decorative and applied works.

Absorption in painting

When creating pictures, this technique is used as an independent or as an auxiliary. In the first case, the work is created, usually using chromatic shades, that is, the entire range of possible shades. The second option involves creating a monochrome image, which is also called grisaille. It allows you to concentrate on tonal transitions, creating the shape and volume of objects, not paying attention to the color. Often the technique of glaze is used to create underpainting in oil painting (distribution of tonal transitions).

Step by step watercolor painting

If you decide to master the technique of layer-by-layer creation of a landscape, portrait or still life, pay attention to the complexity of the plot. Choose simple options. To work with nature, make a simple composition of several objects that will not change even after a few weeks of your work. Do not use flowers, fruits or replace natural artificial counterparts.

The general sequence of actions will be as follows:

2. Dry the first layer and begin to fill the parts of the picture with other transparent layers, bypassing the necessary details along the outer or inner contour. 3. Dry the created layer again and follow the third technology with the same technology.

4. At the final stage, the darkest and most saturated areas are created. Do not forget that they must still remain transparent.

Very interesting effects can be achieved with the help of this technique and in arts and crafts. Often a tree is used as a basis for making souvenirs, as it is cheap, affordable, and the assortment of modern blanks is very diverse. Different materials and methods are used to decorate the tree. With regard to glaze, they allow you to change the hue of the original object while preserving the texture of the material (fibers, veins, rings, if you use a tree cut). This can be widely used in his work, when you just need to change the shade of an object, for example, darken or give the decorative effect of aging the surface, rainbow transitions.
