A fierce battle on the river Sit: Rus does not give up

A lot of tragic events experienced our land in its long history. One of the deepest wounds left on the body of the country is the invasion of the Mongol-Tatar army in the distant thirteenth century. The Russian militia fiercely repulsed, the nomads were even more furious. But the forces were unequal. The battle on the river Sit 1238 is an attempt to unite the armies of all principalities in order to repulse the enemy. But it was done, alas, too late. The bitter defeat and huge losses on the part of the Russian people still had consequences: the horde of Batu stopped its advance to the west, not reaching Veliky Novgorod for several miles.

There was a battle on the river Sit on March 4, 1238. From the enemy side, Burundaia's tumes appeared, which considerably exceeded the number of the army of Yuri Vsevolodovich, the Vladimir prince. The Mongols were informed of the strength and composition of the Russian regiments by Prince Gleb, a traitor who was expelled by almost all of his fellow tribesmen. Therefore, Batu sent about forty thousand of his warriors, who, however, also almost all died in this massacre.

The battle on the river Sit had its own prehistory. After the capture of the city of Vladimir (February 7), Batu sent his horde through Yuriev-Polsky and Pereslavl-Zalessky to Torzhok and Tver. However, part of his many thousands of troops under the command of Burundai's temnik, he sent Prince Yuri Konstantinovich's nephews to the city where the Russian warriors gathered.

Three weeks the corps of Burundai reached the militia, overcoming huge distances (at the same time, the main forces of the invaders were half way). Toward the City, he approached from Uglich and attacked the Russian army, taken by surprise. The unprepared soldiers resisted, but almost all died or were captured.

The battle on the river Sit lasted two days. The first to take charge was a three-thousand-strong sentry regiment on the night of the second of March. The main militia was stationed in nearby villages, so the Mongols surrounded all the villages practically simultaneously. On the banks of the river, the remnants of the squad were gathered, and they were pushed to the ice from both sides. Under the weight of the armed soldiers, the ice broke, and the last defenders of the fatherland fell into the cold water.

So ended the heroic battle on the river Sit. The map of this battle will help to more vividly represent the events of almost eight hundred years ago. Prince Yuri, later ranked among the holy martyrs, perished, fighting with his warriors. His head was separated from the body and presented as a gift to the Khan Batu. However, this gift was not very encouraging to the Commander-in-Chief: he saw that he was losing too many of his troops with each city he took, so he thought about suspending his campaign to Russian lands.

The battle on the Sit River is a tragic page of our history, it led to the dependence on the Golden Horde of the principalities of northeast Russia. Completely ruined Ryazan, Murom, Vladimir, Suzdal, Kozelsk, Torzhok, the burnt district villages lost not only the accumulated good, but also people who either fell in clashes or were stolen into slavery. This defeat strengthened the Mongols in the idea that all Russian lands could be captured, so later they marched on a new campaign against Kiev, Chernigov and Galicia-Volyn lands.
