How to connect USB-modem to the router? Connection and configuration guide

In urban conditions, it is easy to connect to the Internet. It's enough just to leave an application for connection to a city provider (one of many). Within two or three days you will be connected and moreover will offer some promotional conditions as a new subscriber. But what do users who live, for example, in the private sector, in remote areas of the region do? There, city providers usually can not reach, because you have to spend a lot of cable or expensive equipment, which either does not pay off at all, or only for a very long time. So you can understand providers.

Fortunately, there are other solutions. For example, you can use a USB modem to connect to the Internet over a third (3G) or even fourth (4G) generation network. However, in this case, this modem must be connected to the laptop. But how to connect the USB-modem to the router and make the Internet available for any Wi-Fi device? This option is actively practiced by users, which the city provider does not have.

We figure out how to connect a USB-modem to the router

At once we will notice, that for the decision of this problem any router will not approach. You need a special model with a modem connection function, that is, a router with a USB port for the modem. Next, we will tell you in detail what you need to do.

So, setting up a router for a USB modem looks like this:

  1. Install the software from the drives that come with the router and USB modem.
  2. Disable PIN verification on the SIM card. It is necessary. If there is a check that the router simply can not understand, there will not be Internet. You can disable it using a regular mobile phone. Simply insert the SIM card into your phone and disable PIN verification in the settings.
  3. Plug the modem into the USB port on the router.
  4. Connect to the router from the laptop, go to the control panel. To do this, write the address in the address bar of the browser, and you will get to the desired place. You can see the address you need on the panel of the device. In addition, on the information sticker and in the instruction it is also always indicated.
  5. In the router menu, we are looking for the "Connection", "Internet", "Enable dial-up connection" buttons. These buttons may be slightly different, but the essence should be something like this. We are interested in the function of the modem connection. It must be turned on.
  6. After power-on, reboot the router. You can do this by clicking the reload button in the menu bar. The router itself can also be physically reset: remove the plug from the socket and insert it back.

Now you know how to connect the USB-modem to the router. Usually this process is simple, and no difficulties arise, but they are still not excluded. For example, a pre-modem needs to be configured on the computer. An unconfigured modem will not work with the router.

Advantages of this method

A router with a USB port for a modem is a good and practical solution that has its pros and cons. So, to advantages it is possible to carry relative simplicity of connection. That is, you need to stretch out any cables, drill holes, etc. Just plug the USB modem through the router, and you're done. True, this ends the benefits.

Minuses

The main disadvantage of this connection is the high cost of equipment and tariff. At a minimum, a router for a USB modem will cost more than a standard Wi-Fi router without a USB port. Also, you need to buy a modem yourself, which can cost even more than the router itself. Depending on the operator you choose, the cost of the tariff can also be more or less high. But in any case, the subscription tariff will cost more than what the city provider offers.

Connection speed

If the city network involves connecting to the Internet at speeds of up to 100 MBit / s, then the modem of such speeds will not be able to exactly offer. Even if he uses the fourth generation (4G) data transmission network, the real speed will be around 15-20 MBytes per second, which, admittedly, is pretty cool. But, most likely, the modem will use some third generation (3G) network technology, and if the actual (and not advertising) speed is at least 5 MB / s, then this is already quite good. At a minimum, you can watch movies online at this speed. Therefore, before connecting the USB-modem to the router, make sure of the real speed of the Internet.

Is there any other way out?

Some users are often interested in whether it is possible to connect the router to a USB modem without a USB port. To do this, of course, it is possible, but it is extremely difficult. The idea is to open the router itself, solder the USB interface and flash it with a special firmware that will "see" the USB port. But few people practice such a scheme. However, there is another interesting way.

Distributing Wi-Fi from the laptop

If you have a modem, but there is no router with a USB port for the modem, then you can connect to the Internet and create a Wi-Fi network home using a standard laptop. Just the laptop itself will replace the router. The main thing is that the laptop had a working Wi-Fi adapter.

The easiest way is to use the Connectify program. By the way, it is available on the Internet for free, but it also has a paid version with a wider functionality. We will be free. Download it, install it on your computer and run it.

There we need to fill in the lines:

  1. Hotspot Name is the name of your network. In the free version, it will be standard, you can not change it.
  2. The Password line - enter here the password that will be used to access the network.
  3. The Internet to share line. There you need to select from the drop-down list the Internet signal source that will be used for distribution on Wi-Fi. Choose our modem:
  4. In Share Over, select the Wi-Fi item.
  5. In the Sharing Mode, choose WPA2 encryption.

Now click on the big button at the bottom - Start HotSpot. So we turned our laptop into an access point. Now he will distribute Wi-Fi instead of the usual router.

If you can not configure this program for any reason, you can use others. For example, the free MyPublicWiFi program offers the same functionality. In addition to it, there is myHotSpot with similar features. You can not use any programs at all. The built-in tools of the operating system Windows 7 allow you to make an access point from the laptop, but you'll have to tinker with them. It is best to use third-party programs.

That's all. Now you know how to connect the USB-modem to the router and distribute Wi-Fi from the laptop without a router at all.
