Why does tingling occur in the legs?

Each of us periodically feels tingling in the legs, especially after a long sitting in an uncomfortable position. However, there are cases when such a phenomenon arises spontaneously and for no apparent reason. It is worth thinking about, but is this a harmless symptom? As a rule, the sensation of tingling in the legs is not related to poor blood circulation and passes independently in a few minutes. Such a state arises at the pressure and contraction of nerve cells, as a result of which the blood flow becomes difficult. After eliminating the cause, the blood flow is normalized, oxygen and glucose again begin to flow freely to the nerves, after which the unpleasant sensations pass. The scientific name of this phenomenon is paresthesia. Tingling refers to sensations that occur on a specific area of the skin surface. Often, along with this, a person feels burning, numbness, constriction or chilliness.

Chronic tingling in the legs can be a symptom of such diseases:

  • Heart attack;
  • A tumor or abscess of the brain;
  • multiple sclerosis;
  • rheumatoid arthritis;
  • HIV;
  • Cancer pathologies;
  • Lyme disease ;
  • Thyroid gland diseases ;
  • Malnutrition;
  • alcoholism;
  • Radiation exposure;
  • Trauma to the spine or neck;
  • dehydration;
  • Lack of vitamins;
  • menopause;
  • diabetes;
  • Muscular overstrain;
  • Severe anxiety;
  • Damage to the nervous system.

If the tingling in the legs is chronic, it is recommended to check your blood for the amount of sugar, the increase of which can indicate the development of diabetes, and attention should be paid to the condition of the vessels of the lower extremities. If violations are still there, it is necessary to urgently begin treatment, otherwise the consequences can become irreversible. In diabetics, for example, there is often a significant lowering of the pain threshold, which can lead to the formation of ulcers and wounds. In addition, the patient must constantly monitor the skin of the legs, especially when deformed and sensitized. Before the beginning of treatment the doctor necessarily conducts dopplerography and ultrasound scans the main vessels.

Symptoms requiring compulsory medical attention:

  • Tingling is permanent;
  • Presence of such accompanying signs as weakness, loss of sensitivity, awkwardness and pain;
  • Violation of coordination of movements;
  • Decrease in temperature sensitivity.

In order to eliminate tingling in the soles of the feet, sometimes it is enough to simply change the position to release the pinched nerve endings. If such a feeling occurs often, you need to check your shoes, which should not only be comfortable, but also free. Another way to get rid of discomfort is a balanced diet that contains a sufficient amount of vitamin B and potassium. Many people, whose tingling in the legs appears regularly, find salvation in yoga, the various positions of which have a beneficial effect on blood circulation. In any case, it is recommended to first consult a specialist, because the disease is easier to prevent than to eliminate its consequences.
