In the late eighties and early nineties, the name of Katharina Witt was known to everyone who had anything to do with figure skating. She was called an ice princess. For the whole history of figure skating, there was not one skater who could match her.

German figure skater Katarina Witt: childhood and the beginning of a sports career

Katie was born in the city of Staaken (GDR) on December 3, 1965, in the family of an agronomist and instructor in curative gymnastics. In addition to her, the eldest son Axel grew up in the family. Kindergarten, which was visited by a small Katya, was not far from the ice rink, and the girl from the windows of her room watched the athletes' training sessions for a long time. At home, she indulged in dreams, in which she performed various tricks, standing on skates. Parents did not think to send a daughter to the sports club, but my mother could not resist the persuasion of her pet. And one day, taking five-year-old Katya by the hand, she took her to the section on figure skating. It turned out that the reception was over, they were advised to come at the beginning of the next academic year. However, when the coach saw how the baby, for the first time on skates, began to glide smoothly over the ice, she decided to make an exception for her. So the only daughter of the family, Vitt Katharina, became 101 first-class pupils of the school of figure skating in East Berlin. By the end of the school year, of all the pupils in the section there was only one, namely the future double Olympic champion Katarina Witt.

Way to victory

When Katya went to school, a very busy weekday began for the girl. After school, she went to the skating rink, and spent the evening for lessons. At the same time she managed to get good grades. At nine years old, one of the most famous figure skating instructors in the GDR - Jutta Müller - drew attention to her. She saw in the pretty girl great sport potential and decided to make her a champion. It was under her leadership that young Witt Katharina was able to win all of her gold medals.

A very warm relationship developed between the coach and the girl. She was for her and mother, and an older friend, and mentor. As Katie later admits, she was always a little afraid of the coach. However, this did not prevent Katharina from playing a prank: to disrupt training, to go to all sorts of tricks so that the scales did not show her true weight, there were several cakes at once, etc. The girl was sweet, so she almost always had a problem of excess weight. And if not for her diligence and perseverance, the world would not have learned about the skater Witt. Katarina for many years stubbornly walked to the heights of glory. And in 1979, a fourteen-year-old skater was sent to represent the country at the World Championships, where she took 10th place. However, after a year Katya became the gold medalist of the GDR championship.

Sports victories and awards

For her sports career, she managed to win more than 20 international awards. She is a four-time world champion (1984-1988, except 1986), two-time Olympic champion (1984 and 1988), six-time European champion and eight-time (consecutive) champion of the GDR. After winning the 1988 Olympics she left the big sport.

Return to the ice

But soon the world once again started talking about the German figure skater Witt. Katarina in 1994 took part in the film "Carmen on Ice", for which she received the Emmy award. And after 4 years she with the show program during the demonstration performances at the Winter Olympics and in honor of her return to the ice received the prize "Golden Camera". And after 4 years she starred in the artistic picture of "Ronnie". In the same year the magazine "Playboy" finally came to an agreement with the figure skater, and appeared in a completely new role Katarina Witt.
