A few years later Ephraim went into the desert, where he put the cell and closed himself from everyone in it, being in constant prayers. Gradually, other monks joined him.

In Novgorod, Ephraim assumed the priesthood and, having returned to his former place of residence, founded there a temple in honor of the Epiphany of the Lord. Later, another church was built nearby in the name of Nicholas the Wonderworker.
