What is Voroshilovgrad called now? Voroshilovgrad - what city is it now?

Cities are very often renamed. History knows a lot of examples, when one city for the period of its existence changed its name several times. In such a situation, confusion may occur, so it is not surprising that many are asking themselves about the name of Voroshilovgrad now. In order to give an answer to this question, it is necessary to go a little deeper into the past. In the history of this city, a large number of different glorious names and pages are proud of the townspeople, but most of all it is known for the number of name changes. He was even called the champion in this.

Decree of Catherine II

Back in 1795 Catherine II signed a decree on the construction of the Lugansk iron foundry on the Lugan River, near the village of Kamenny Brod. He, in fact, and became a city-forming enterprise. In order to provide the factory with the necessary labor, several hundred families were brought there, mainly from the Kherson, Olonets and Lipetsk plants.

In fact, Lugansk plant was the first such a large metallurgical enterprise in the southern part of Russia. He supplied the Black Sea Fleet with shells and guns, and the entire country with cast iron. Thanks to this enterprise, the battle of Borodino became as we know it. Also guns of the Lugansk plant took part in the Crimean War.

Contribution of Alexander III

Continuing to seek an answer to the question of what is now called Voroshilovgrad, we are getting closer to the point. On September 3, 1882, Emperor Alexander III built the village together with the Lugansk plant "for the degree of the district town under the name of Lugansk." It was from this moment on that the settlement that grew around this plant can be officially considered a city.

In the same year, the city council was assembled, which, naturally, was located in one of the best buildings along Kazanskaya Street. In 1903 the city's coat of arms was approved.

Since this time, Lugansk has acquired industry and is growing right before our eyes. And by 1905 it was possible to count more than 39 industrial enterprises, not counting small (or even handicraft) industries.

Active development of the city

Even in spite of the fact that the city building was not supported by any officially approved plan, for these purposes the enormous sums of 20 million rubles were allocated for those times. The first street was English, because there were specialists from England who were invited to work at the foundry. Also invited was the well-known for those times doctor I.M. Dahl, who later became the father of the world-famous ethnographer Vladimir Ivanovich Dal, who later compiled the Dictionary of the Living Great Russian Language. By the way, he took even a talking pseudonym Kazak Lugansky.

Voroshilovgrad (as it is now called, everyone understands) had at that time more than 10 religious buildings. Unfortunately, to our days have survived units because of the destruction of the 30's. XX century.

Voroshilovgrad: the meaning of the word, the definition of the word

Of course, you can very long argue about the renaming of cities and what is now called Voroshilovgrad, because every time you read historical or fiction, you come across different names of the same city, so there can be confusion.

So, in 1935 on November 5, by the decision of the Central Executive Committee of the USSR, the city of Lugansk was officially named Voroshilovgrad.

Undoubtedly, this event was preceded by the September appropriation of the rank of Marshal of the Soviet Union to five commanders, among whom was Voroshilov. Despite the fact that this decision was made not at the local level, but in Moscow, the residents of the former Lugansk accepted it enthusiastically. Immediately, large-scale companies were deployed for this, for example, a subbotnik "Voroshilovsky Campaign", which was accompanied by the slogan "Wash off the face of the city for centuries accumulated dirt."

And Voroshilov himself put a lot of effort into settling this city. Construction of new schools, the opening of two tram routes, the asphalting of streets, the creation of a park of culture, landscaping and much more. By the way, it was thanks to him that in 1938 the region became known as Voroshilovgrad, Lugansk region.

There is also evidence that Voroshilov did not leave this city in the years to come. So, the military school of pilots, the Youth Theater, the Palace of Culture, the Opera and Ballet Theater, clubs, the Russian Regional Drama Theater, cinemas, the Regional Puppet Theater, the Children's Regional Library and much more were created.

Again Lugansk

Despite the fact that earlier Lugansk was called Voroshilovgrad, already in 1957 the question arose of his renaming. This is due to the fact that the Decree was issued, in which it was forbidden to assign the names of living people to cities, despite their achievements.

So, the following year, in 1958 (March 5), Voroshilovgrad became again Lugansk. And many witnesses of those events unanimously said that they did not fully understand what it was necessary to rename in an instant, not only the city, but all the streets and even dismantle the monuments. So, in the morning people went to work on Voroshilovskaya Street, and in the evening they returned by October.

Many people say that they perfectly remember that night when a monument was dismantled in the light of searchlights, and many could not sleep at all because of the noise of the working technique, but because of some anxiety in the soul. Monuments put people not just for that, but for outstanding services, and therefore their dismantling is a kind of blasphemy. But it is worth saying that Voroshilov himself initiated the decree.

Again Voroshilovgrad

In order to be aware of what is called the city of Voroshilovgrad at a particular time, it is necessary to monitor the political mood in the country and various events. So, for example, on December 3, 1969, Kliment Efremovich Voroshilov passed away. The next month, in order to perpetuate his memory, it was decided to rename the city of Lugansk again.

It is worth noting that by that time the memory of the townspeople had not cooled down, they again accepted this idea with all their cordiality.

Last renaming

So we come to what is now called the city of Voroshilovgrad. On May 4, 1990 the settlement was returned to its original name, it again became Lugansk.

The history of this city is struck not only by a large number of different renaming, but also by the fact that it has always been considered the heart of the whole USSR thanks to hardworking people who know how to work and are able to do it.

Now everyone knows what Voroshilovgrad is called now, and even though all its renames are far in the past, residents have not forgotten about the history of their city, and even now there are always initiatives to return the city's historical name.

Modern Lugansk

In fact, any renaming of the city should have some compelling reasons: territorial, connected with dissonance, political, etc. But be that as it may, they must be strong enough and justified, not only because it carries with them some definitely high costs, but also because the changes are immediately followed by renaming in history, And in the memory of the inhabitants, and in their fate.

If you turn your attention to the existing list of all the cities that were renamed, then most of all they fall precisely on the countries of the socialist camp. This was due to the fact that at first the cities were given the names of politicians, after which their original names were returned, and so on in a circle. Despite this, Voroshilovgrad (as it is now called, we found out) was and remains the city of eternal labor glory. It is a city of strong men and beautiful women, who will remain so, whatever name he has.

Unfortunately, modern Lugansk is in a state of collapse, in the conditions of war. Perhaps, another change of political regime will also carry the change of the name of the city, which will turn a new page in its history.
