What is the height of the free fall of water in the Angel Falls

Salto Ángel, or simply Angel - the highest waterfall in the world. Despite such a name (which can be translated as "angel jump"), there is nothing in common with celestial creatures in this phenomenon of nature. The waterfall bears the name of its discoverer - not the first, by the way, but more famous: a pilot from the US, whose name was James Crawford Angel. The English surname Angel in Spanish is read as Angel. In honor of the pilot, who flew over a waterfall in 1933, this natural object is named included in the famous UNESCO List, containing World Heritage sites. The question arises: how could you not notice earlier this sparkling strip of water with a height of three Eiffel towers? Below we will tell the story of the discovery of the hidden miracle of nature and find out its parameters.

What is the height of Angel Falls?

This water stream is located in Venezuela, in the Canaima National Park. Its coordinates are 5 ° 58'03 "north latitude and 62 ° 32'08" west longitude. Park Kanajma is interesting because there are amazing mountains tepuy here. They have very steep edges and flat tops. With one such high mountain called Auyantepuy and the falls of Angel falls. The river Kerepupaia itself is not extensive. It begins here, on the plateau of the Devil's Mountain (so the name Auyantepuy is translated). But the stream saturated with equatorial rains is thrown from the steep edge absolutely vertically, from a height of nine hundred and seventy-nine meters. If you look from below, it seems that the waterfall starts directly from the plateau. However, if you look closely, it can be seen that the Kerepupkai cut through the water layers of light red sandstone. So what is the height of the free fall of water in the waterfall of Angel? Only eight hundred and seven meters. But this figure is also very impressive. For comparison: the Victoria falls in South Africa is only 107 meters high.

A beautiful sight

The view of Salto Ángel is simply mesmerizing. The river falls down a hundred meters. The height of the free fall of water in the Angel Falls is such that the droplets scatter in flight turn into fog. Sometimes you can feel it for a few kilometers. A dense mist of mist is considered a breeze, and only some of the water falls into the bowl of a small lake, from which the Churun River then flows. The width of the stream is one hundred and seven meters, and the water flow is three hundred cubic meters per second. Not far from Angel is the lagoon of Canaima, where water from nearby waterfalls gathers. Behind the wall of one of them, Salto al-Sapo, a large grotto hides, in which especially strenuous footage of the film "The Last of the Mohicans" was shot.

Excursions to the sights of Venezuela

The significant height of the free fall of water in the waterfall Angel draws many travelers. And despite the fact that all approaches to tepuy cover the virgin jungle, the flow of tourists who want to see the "most-most" does not weaken. It's easier and quicker to make an aerial excursion: after the American pilot fly over the waterfall and admire the spectacle from above. The only thing that can prevent you is the overcast weather. Therefore, many tourists get to the foot of tepui by air. In Canaima equipped with an airfield, nearby - many hotels and restaurants. Get to Angel and the river. First - on motor boats to the village of Canaima, and then about three kilometers on foot through the jungle.

Opening of Angel

Indians of the tribe pemon was before, many centuries ago, it is known that there is such a wonderful waterfall. They called it Churun-Meru. After all, the height of the free fall of water in the waterfall Angel is such that it is difficult not to notice it even in the thickest selva! He is fifteen times higher than the famous Niagara. The whole world was admired by the Empire State Building in New York. But Angel was two and a half times higher than this once-majestic skyscraper. Interestingly, the discoverer-European was not at all an American pilot, but a scientist from Spain. His name is Ernesto Sanchos La Cruz. In the year nineteen ten, he reached the waterfall and announced his discovery in a specialized scientific journal. For the general public, a heart-wrenching history of the Flamingo plane was needed. James Angel watched the waterfall in 1933, and in 1937 decided to make a landing near him. The plane damaged the chassis and got stuck in a marshy ground. The unlucky pilot, his wife Mary and two companions were not injured. But they had to leave the broken plane on top of tepui, go down the steep slopes and in the continuation of eleven days to reach civilization.

Further history of Angel

In 1949, an expedition from the National Geographic Community of the United States picked up through the jungle to the waterfall. Researchers carefully measured the parameters of this miracle of nature. At the same time, the height of the free fall of water in the Angel Falls was also determined. It is interesting that the plane "Flamingo" stood at the scene of the accident for thirty-three years, until it was taken away by helicopter to the city of Maracay. There it was restored and now it beautifies the airport of Ciudad Bolivar.

In 1993, UNESCO declared the waterfall the World Heritage of Mankind. And in December 2009, the President of Venezuela decided to return this natural landmark to its national ancient name. In his speech, Hugo Chavez stressed that the waterfall was known as the Kerepupkai-Meru even before any American pilots. But on maps and atlases, he still appears as Angel.
