What are the dances? Name of dance types

To express the emotions and feelings that flooded them, feelings, expectations and hopes, our ancient ancestors used rhythmic ritual dances. With the development of the man himself and the social environment surrounding him, more and more different dances appeared, becoming increasingly complex and sophisticated. Today even specialists will not be able to indicate the name of the types of dances - all performed by people for centuries. However, the dance culture, having passed through the centuries, is actively developing. On the basis of folk and classical new and modern styles and directions appear.

What it is?

Before considering what kinds of dances there are, let's clarify, but what is it really like? The shortest and most complex of art forms, in which the human body and its plastic possibilities are used to create a unique image, is a dance. It is impossible without the personality of the artist and music. The performer, building on the content of the musical work, builds a "picture" of the dance and embodies his vision and sensual perception in motion. This action can be used as a way of social communication and self-expression, competitive sports discipline and part of religious worship, and also as an exponential type of art that is constantly evolving and changing. In it there are all new styles and forms, different kinds of dances, the variety of which even experts puts in a "dead end".

History of appearance

The very first dances of people were ritual performed by them in the hope of a successful hunt or plentiful harvest, the healing of the sick or victory in the war. Over time, rhythmic movements were subjected to generalization, which was the beginning of the formation of art of ethnic direction, which has its own characteristics and traditions for each of the peoples. All the variety of dance moves originated from the main types of human movements - running, walking, jumping, rocking and turning. Over time, the following types of folk dances appeared: everyday (for oneself), and also performed on display - cult and scenic.

In this article we will consider in more detail what kinds of dances are in modern choreographic art.

Beginning and mid-20th century

Such a subdivision into two stages, not by chance. According to many performers of the beginning of the last century, dance as an art form was to reflect a new reality, rather than adhere to the "frozen" in time canons of old ballet schools. At this time, there are such choreographic trends, popular today, as:

  1. Free dance.
  2. Modern.
  3. Butoh.
  4. Contemporary (kontempor).
  5. Jazz Modern.

Let us dwell in more detail on each of them, since they had a great influence on the formation and development of many styles and trends of contemporary dance art.

Free dance

This is primarily a special worldview of the performer, formed under the influence of Nietzsche's ideas. The performer, denying the canonical rules of ballet choreography, sought to combine dance and real life, manifesting himself as a liberated spirit of creativity. It is on the basis of free style that such trends as modern and buto, jazz-modern and kontemp originated and developed.

Modern

Arising at the beginning of the century, this dance direction is very popular today and is one of the leading in the western choreography school. As well as free dance, modernism denies any ballet norms and seeks to embody on the stage various forms using new original methods. It is characterized by a semantic fullness, a wide range of movements, high jumps and flexibility, "broken" postures and movements, various twists unusual for ballet choreography.

Contemporary dance

Quite reasonably we can say that such popular styles in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as free dance and modernity served as the basis for the formation of such a direction as a contemporary (kontempori). This dance, as an art form, offers the dancer through various choreographic styles to fully demonstrate in improvisation all his inner emotions and resources.

Jazz Modern

The main feature of this trend is the combination of jazz improvisational rhythms and energy, coordination and work with the body and breath of the modernist, as well as the movements inherent in the classical ballet school. Thus, the body of the jazz-modern dancer becomes yet another musical instrument that manifests a melody through the plastics of its own body.

Butoh

This is one of the youngest dance techniques that appeared in the fifties of the XX century in Japan. Butoh, despite a fairly long existence, and today remains for the people of the Western world the most difficult to understand. It is based on the cultural, philosophical, religious and aesthetic values of the Land of the Rising Sun. This dance seeks to show the earthiness of the ordinary life of an ordinary person, and to comprehend and demonstrate the body and its possibilities in space and time.

Modern dance of the end of XX and the beginning of the XXI century

All the variety of modern dances can, of course, be conditionally divided into two large groups:

  • Street;
  • Club.

What are usually considered street, and which are club? How do they differ? Let's understand.

Street dance

Hip-hop and Krump, popping and locking, break dance and C-walk are all names for the kinds of dances that are "born" not on the stage stages and in the dance studios, but in the streets and courtyards of megacities, discos and clubs. Most of them are based on hip-hop. In street style, the performer is not limited to any form and can easily improvise and experiment, creating an individual and unique pattern of movements, as well as interacting with other dancers and with the public. In the "pure" form they are extremely rare, and for the most part began to be performed in clubs, and not in the streets, because of what often fall into the category of club. Here are the most popular and common directions:

  • New Style (NewStyle).
  • Krump is an abbreviation for the Kingdom Radically Uplifted Mighty Praise, meaning "Empire of the Absolute Power of Spiritual Praise".
  • Locking.
  • Popping.
  • LA-Style.
  • Crip walk (C-walk).
  • R & B.
  • Brakedance.
  • Hip-Hop.

Club dances

It is a temperamental, bright and incredible mixture of various modern styles that allows you to express yourself in movement. Everyone, as they say, "by ear" the name of the types of dances of this direction:

  • Tectonics or electro dance.
  • Jazz-Funk (jazz-funk).
  • House (house).
  • Jumpstyle (jumpingstyle).
  • Melbourne shuffle.
  • Waacking (waking).
  • Go-Go (Club Go).
  • Square dance (square dance).
  • DnBstep.
  • Ragga (ragga) and many others.

It is impossible to list all kinds of dances. List of names of modern styles and directions is constantly changing and supplementing. Today, dancing is not only a plastic art, but also a fairly common sport.

Dance Sport

If in former times dances were perceived only as an art form, then the complication of technical and choreographic requirements for execution led to the need for an excellent physical form of those who do it. Today the main types of sports dances are, first of all, ballroom. Their peculiarity is the execution by partners of a set of certain mandatory movements and figures under pre-set music. The ballroom dances that are judged at the competitions consist of three parts: compulsory, original and optional.

With the passage of time, new musical and choreographic styles and directions appear. And now such modern types of sports dances, like break or lock, jumpstyle or pole dance (dances on a pole), attract more and more fans from different age groups. To participate in competitions in these areas, athletes need not only excellent choreographic, but also physical training. Those who do not want to win international competitions, but try to maintain their own body in good shape, you can recommend fitness classes in various dance techniques. Tver, high heels, go-go, strip-plastic, belly dance, zumba, sexy R & B, ragga, buti-dance - these are the types of dances most demanded by the fair sex . Girls are attracted in them not only the opportunity to adjust the figure, but also improve the plastic and enhance their own self-esteem.
