Treatment of thyroid cancer in Israeli clinics

The thyroid gland takes its place in the neck of a person, just below the chin, and resembles a butterfly in shape. Being mainly a producer of hormones, the thyroid gland affects almost all metabolic processes in the body, including the rate of burning of the colonies and the frequency of the heart rhythm. All these processes are called metabolism.

Diseases of the thyroid gland can range from a small, harmless growth of the thyroid gland (enlargement of the thyroid gland), which does not need treatment, to a life-threatening cancer. The most common thyroid problems are associated with abnormal production of thyroid hormones.

Although the consequences can be unpleasant or inconvenient, with most thyroid problems one can learn to manage well if correctly and quickly diagnosed and choose the necessary treatment.

Thyroid cancer occurs in the cells of the thyroid gland - a gland in the form of a butterfly, located at the base of the neck, just below the "apple of Adam". The human thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and weight.

Although thyroid cancer is not a common cancer in the world, the rate of its spread is increasing. Doctors think that the reason for this is that new technologies that allow them to find small tumors in the thyroid gland may not have been found in the past.

Most cases of thyroid cancer can be cured by an appropriate treatment for each patient. The development of the best individual treatment is performed by oncologists in the best clinics in Israel.

This type of cancer usually does not cause any signs or symptoms in the early stages of the disease. As thyroid cancer develops, the following symptoms may appear:

• Who can be felt through the skin on the neck;

• changes in voice, including the appearance of hoarseness;

• difficulty swallowing;

• pain in the neck and throat;

• enlarged lymph nodes in the neck.

When should I see a doctor?

If you experience these signs or symptoms, you should immediately make an appointment with a doctor. Thyroid cancer is not a common disease, so first your doctor can examine other causes of signs and symptoms in the first place.

Diagnostic stage

• Blood test (general, biochemistry, coagulation, electrolytes, thyroid hormones, immunology, thyroid gland).

• In case of suspected medullary cancer, a calcitonin test is required.

• PET (positron emission tomography) and CT (computed tomography) of the whole body.

• Ultrasound and Doppler scan of the thyroid gland, including biopsy of thyroid histopathology.

• Consultation of the onco-surgeon.

In the case of hormonal imbalance before surgery recommended consultation of the endocrinologist.

In some cases, a radioisotope scan of the thyroid gland is required.

Surgery in the medical center "Assuta"

There are three types of operations available:

• Option 1: partial thyroidectomy, including one day of hospitalization in Assuta and express histopathology.

• Option 2: radical thyroidectomy, including two days of hospitalization in Assuta and express histopathology.

• Option 3 (when lymph nodes of the neck are damaged): radical thyroidectomy and neck dissection, including three days of hospitalization in Assuta and express histopathology.

Before the beginning of any operation, a routine pre-operative screening (ECG, chest X-ray, anesthesia consultation) is performed.

After discharge, the patient is recommended to stay in Israel for at least 7 days.
