Traditional Jewish headgear: interesting facts

Many of us clearly realize what we are talking about when we mention the headdress worn by orthodox Jews. However, not every one answers correctly the question "what is the headpiece of the Jews called?" We suggest that we study this issue together and learn more about this ancient people and its traditions.

The traditional hat of Jewish men is called "yarmulka" or "kip". It is believed that this little round cap received its name from the phrase "fearing the king", which in Hebrew sounds like "yerei malka".

Wearing a pile is associated with a reverence for God, which the male Jews expressed by covering their heads with a cap. Some Jews began to wear a yarmulke constantly, demonstrating to others that all their actions are aimed at serving the Most High.

It is very easy for a knowledgeable person to determine the confessional belonging of a Jew on his bale. So, if a man wears a knitted yarmulke, he is a religious Zionist, a leather black one is an American neo-orthodoxy, a big white one is a follower of Rabbi Nachman and so on.

Most ultra-Orthodox believe that covering the head with a skull cap is not pious enough. In this regard, they insist on the need to wear an extra headpiece during prayer.

A very small bale, which is sometimes difficult to see in the thick hair of its carrier, is called a cypress pear. Often wearing such a yarmulke suggests that the man plans to permanently remove it, but so far embarrassed to do it.

Headgear of the Jews are always, as they say, at their owners' fingertips. So, religious Jews always wear a pile on their heads, secular people put their yarmulke in a pocket, a car glove box or a bag, since they do not need it in everyday life.

There is a category of Jews who claim to be atheists. They do not wear a pile and claim that the sky is the headdress for them.

A special place in Judaic culture is occupied by knitted headdresses of Jews. According to a romantic legend, they were invented by girls who were members of religious youth movements. They knitted yarmulki to young people, to whom they felt sympathy. By the way, knitting kip and to this day is, perhaps, a favorite version of female needlework. You can meet Jewish women, astringent yarmulki, almost everywhere: in public transport, in line to the doctor or on a bench in the city park.

In the synagogues of the Israeli army there are special yarmulks of protective color. There are also periodic calls to oblige all religious soldiers to wear such bales.

Traditional headgear of Jews today has the right to wear not only men, but also women. But in this case, a sex representative wearing a yarmulke is no longer considered an orthodox Jew. It is referred to a reformist or conservative direction.

Recently, in Israeli shops, you can often find amusing children's bales, which can hardly be associated with religious traditions, since they are mostly decorated with colorful drawings and images of popular cartoon characters: Mickey Mouse, SpongeBob and others.
