In a stylish Moscow mansion, built in the early 20th century, at the Old Arbat, house 26 is the Academic Theater named after Vakhtangov. His story goes back to the distant 1913, when one of Stanislavsky's pupils, Eugene Vakhtangov, decided to create a creative studio for non-professional actors. A group of enthusiasts delivered their first performance, which, however, failed. The sophisticated Moscow audience did not accept the production with a low level of acting skills.

Third studio

Eugene Vakhtangov continued his creative activity and soon he managed to found a theater studio, which later became part of the Moscow Art Theater. Under the roof of the Third Studio (originally called the Vakhtangov Theater), talented people gathered, genuine stage masters, who also think progressively.

Thirties

The theater world of Moscow literally came to life with the appearance of the Vakhtangov troupe, and although in those years the productions on the revolutionary theme dominated, Vakhtang actors were able to present any work-peasant plot as a highly artistic work. Occasions in Vakhtangov Theater and performances that do not meet the revolutionary modernity, for example, the production of "The Princess Turandot" based on the fairy tale by Carlo Gozzi. The premiere took place in the spring of 1922, and the performance made a real sensation.

New time

On May 29, 1922, the whole theatrical Moscow plunged into mourning because of the death of Yevgeny Bagrationovich Vakhtangov. The genius director left a worthy legacy, and his disciples continued the work begun by the master. Meanwhile, political, economic and cultural changes were brewing in the country. The era of the NEP came, which demanded productions that responded to the new era. The management of the theater appealed to the fashionable writer of that period Mikhail Bulgakov with the request to create for the theater some light play on the contemporary theme.

Such a work was "Zoykina apartment", consonant with the mood of the society of the early 30's. It was a sparkling comedy with a witty plot. However, behind the external carelessness of the production, there was an acute satire of social orientation, which the authorities did not like. Some other performances of the Vakhtangov Theater also caused conflicts with officials. Directed by director Akimov "Hamlet" in the style of the buffoonery caused severe criticism of the press. The play was excluded from the repertoire due to eccentricity and apolitical interpretation of the plot.

Repression

Soon the wave of performances devoted to the NEP came to naught, and in all theaters in Moscow , the Leniniana was launched, an endless series of productions glorifying the workers 'and peasants' system. Statehood superseded all the artistic merits of the director's work, the dominance of communist cliches and stereotyped mise-en-scenes became evident. In addition, the Stalinist repressions of the 1930s began. The theater named after Vakhtangov also suffered from them. So, the musician of the orchestra Nikolai Sheremetev, actress Valentina Vargina and actor Oswald Glazunov were arrested. The latter was twice repressed, the second time after the war. Nevertheless, the theater named after Eugene Vakhtangov survived and is still alive, revered by thousands of fans.

Theater today

Currently, the Vakhtangov State Academic Theater is one of the most visited in Moscow. Artistic director Rimas Tuminas continues the traditions of his predecessors. The theater still follows the canons formulated in the early 20th century by Konstantin Stanislavsky. The collective has never changed its reputation for more than ninety-year history of existence. An unforgettable track in the tablets of the Vakhtangov Theater was left by the former art director Mikhail Ulyanov, who died in the spring of 2007. Memory is alive in the hearts of Muscovites and the recently deceased famous actor Yuri Yakovlev.

Among the current Vakhtangov residents, it is possible to single out the patriarch of the scene of Vladimir Etush, the legendary actor Vasily Lanovoy and his wife - the unrivaled actress Irina Kupchenko, Vyacheslav Shalevich and Knyazev Eugene. The young generation of Vakhtangovs is represented by Nonna Grishaeva and Victor Sukhorukov. Artists of the theater are the established creative team of like-minded people for years. There is no hierarchy in the company - all are equal here.

The repertoire of Moscow theaters has always been diverse. The theater of Vakhtangov is not an exception.
