In the past, Znamenskaya

Previously, on the site of the obelisk was the Znamenskaya church, and the area until 1918 was called Znamenskaya. But due to the events unfolding in this area - the manifestations of the February revolution, it was renamed into the Rebellion Square. The church that stood here in 1930 was demolished. In its place was built a new Nikolaevsky station, because atheistic Bolsheviks did not particularly worry about the monument of architecture. And since ideology recognized religion as an opium for the people, there was no question of preserving the church.

Obelisk, which stands in the center of the square in honor of getting Leningrad the title of Hero City, was opened only in 1985. The best engineers of the time worked on the construction of the monument, which allowed to install a monolithic sculpture weighing 360 tons - this work was the first after the famous Alexander Column. It is noteworthy that according to the architects' idea, the star at the top of the obelisk is in harmony with the ship on the Admiralty tower, which emphasizes the contribution of the Northern Fleet to the overall victory.

History of Nevsky Square

It was not founded as an independent object from the very beginning. Built in 1710, the monastery for a long time had before itself an unformed terrain. Over time, the wasteland was transformed into an agora, which became the final part of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, after which it received its name.

Over time, the Bolsheviks renamed it Red. Again this Nevsky Square of St. Petersburg was only in 1952. But the name no longer touched the laurels.

To change beyond recognition, the agora was lucky in 1965, when the Nevsky Bridge was completed. Many buildings were demolished, and in their place appeared traffic junctions.

The Alexander Nevsky Lavra operates today. Nevskaya Square of St. Petersburg, contrary to popular opinion, was named not because of the Neva River, but in honor of Alexander Nevsky. Whereas the name of Zanevskaya Square comes from the river.

Senate square

The Senate, like the Square of the St. Petersburg Uprising, witnessed coups. The military gathered on it, who refused to take the oath to Nicholas I. A hundred years later, in 1929, she became known as the Decembrist. The historical name of the Senate Square of St. Petersburg returned to itself only in 2008.

The legendary "Bronze Horseman", a monument to Peter, in actual fact was not at all copper. It is cast from bronze.
