In the early 1970s, the USSR Ministry of Defense carried out experimental design work called "Bouquet", the purpose of which was the development of a small-sized submachine gun (PG) for a 9x18 cartridge. As a result, none of the samples proposed by the conductors was adopted. In the early 1990s, the topic was again touched upon. The MVD wanted to get a weapon that would occupy a niche between the Makarov pistol and the AK-74U automatic. The armory design bureaus turned to the development of the 70s, among which were the PP-91 "Kedr" and "Klin" pistols. So the story of our today's "hero" began.

Production start

To begin with, we clarify the origin of the name. In this case, "Cedar" is not only the name of the tree species, but also an abbreviation meaning "Evgeny Dragunov's Design". The son of the chief designer - M.E. Dragunov was engaged in the completion and refinement of the model of the 70's. The works were carried out at the legendary Izhevsk Mechanical Plant, where almost all the firearms of Russia were produced. "Cedar" nevertheless was released on the IMZ only in the number of 40 prototypes. As a result, the submachine gun was recognized by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and entered service. Serial production of a submachine gun was handed over to Zlatoustovsky MZ.

For shooting from the model PP-91 "Kedr" cartridges 9x18 PM are used. Almost all of the law enforcement agencies of the Russian Federation are in service with this type of weapon. It is used by special units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, FSKN, FSIN, courier service, collectors and departmental security.

"Wedge"

In 1994, when a more powerful 9x18 PMM cartridge was developed, the need for a machine gun under him arose. So the "Klin" model appeared, the basis for which was "Cedar". The weapon of this version was created as more powerful. Due to the increased impact force, the pace of his shooting had to be reduced slightly. This was achieved with the help of weighting the bolt and applying screw grooves on the inner wall of the chamber. The grooves increased the frictional resistance when the liner moved back and expanded, without leading to a rupture. This ensured the retardation retardation. The rate of shooting "Klin" is about 1000 rounds per minute. Heap of a single fire from a distance of 25 m - 58 mm, and from a distance of 150 m - 393 mm. Otherwise, the submachine gun is completely identical to the "Cedar".

Further development

The modification of the "Wedge" was also produced at the Zlatoust plant. However, its history did not last long. From the cartridge 9x18 PMM soon abandoned, so its use in old weapons is unsafe, and the new cartridge 9x19 has more interesting parameters. Therefore, only the Sub-machine Gun "91 Cedars" remained in service. Based on its design, later created a "service carbine" PKKS for private security structures. It was distinguished by the use of a 9x17 cartridge and a magazine for 10 shells. It would seem, why create a version that is so slightly different from the original? The answer can be found in legislation that does not allow the use of more serious weapons for such purposes.

A traumatic version of the PP "Kedr" was also produced. The weapon was called PDT-9T, or "Esaul" (the photo is shown below). In order to be able to wear PP under the outer clothing, without attracting unnecessary attention, a special suspension was created. It provided not only a reliable attachment of weapons, but also its instantaneous delivery. For the "Cedar" was also designed a silencer, which in design resembles the model for the gun ABP.

Device "Cedar"

The Russian submachine gun PP-91 "Kedr" has an automatic system that operates on the principle of recoil with a free shutter. The fire is conducted with a closed shutter, which makes it possible to achieve greater accuracy. The trigger type KAM allows shooting both single shots and bursts. "Cedar" has a gate delay and a fuse, which is located on the right side of the receiver. When on, the fuse blocks the release hook and the shutter. As a rule, submachine guns are equipped with a butt, with no exception, and this weapon. "Cedar" is equipped with a metal butt that folds up.

In addition to the silencer, which was mentioned above, a laser target designator can be installed on the PP . By default, for aiming in the PP "Cedar" there is a fly and a rear sight. disadvantages

Without shortcomings, too, does not do:

1. The butt of the butt is not very comfortable against the shoulder of the shooter, so during the shooting, the gun is shifted.
2. Due to the use of a relatively weak cartridge, the weapon has a low muzzle energy - 295 Joules.
3. The barrel, unprotected by the casing, overheats in a long fire and can burn the hands of an arrow.
4. When firing a burst of ammunition consumed very quickly because of the small capacity of the store.
5. The set of the submachine gun includes only a couple of stores.

Versions PP-91 "Cedar"

The weapon has quite a few modifications, consider each of them:

1. The version of "Cedar-B", which differs only in the presence of an integrated silencer.
2. The "Wedge" model, which we considered above. It features improved ballistics, which entailed some changes in the design of the shutter (increased mass and the presence of screw grooves).
3. Modification of PP-919, it is also "Cedar-2". Designed specifically for the cartridge Parabellum caliber 9x19 mm. Used in the service of the federal tax police. Only 3 copies were issued.
4. Pistol-carbine with the PSC-10 index. This is a self-loading version, which was created for a 9x17 mm cartridge. A pistol was developed for private security services. In addition to the reduced caliber, it had a magazine with a capacity of 10 cartridges.
5. Carabiner "Korsak", produced under the KMO-9 index. It features elongated trunks and caliber 9x21 mm. This modification was developed for sports training and hunting shooting.
6. Traumatic modification "Corporal". Distinctive features: a store for 10 rounds and a caliber of 10x23 T. A model is proposed for private security agencies.
7. Two more traumatic variants - "Esaul" and "Esaul-3". The first is designed for the 9 mm cartridge of RA, and the second - for the cartridge of Rubber 45. The store of both versions contains 10 shells.
