Many centuries ago, when people had vague ideas about why there is a change of day and night, why the sun shines in the summer, and in the winter it snows, why birds fly away in winter, and in the spring they come back, important life in their life played signs and superstitions. The modern man has got used to be guided by the intuition and transfer of the forecast of weather for tomorrow. He does not believe in signs. Indeed, it is very difficult to believe in what does not lend itself to a logical explanation.

Most of the signs have come to us from the heathen times. Ancient people who did not differ in knowledge in different areas of life tried to explain all the changes taking place around them with the help of signs and, more often, from the point of view of nature. At each time of the year they had at least a dozen signs, which were passed from one generation to another, until finally they reached our days.

Autumn is a transition period between summer and winter. By many of its signs, one can judge what to expect from the approaching winter.

Signs of autumn. September:

  • Ripe rose - autumn came to the threshold;

  • On the first day of October, cranes fly away - to wait for frost on the Pokrov day;
  • On the Sergiev day (October 8) it began to snow - winter would fall in 40 days;
  • Birds flew south in the first days of October - to a cold, frosty winter;
  • Morning frost in October - the day will be dry, clear;
  • All the leaves from the trees flew around - autumn will be sunny, and winter - warm;
  • A bullfinch appeared in the yard - there will soon be bad weather;
  • Thunder in October - winter without snow;
  • The crows sat down on the lower branches of the trees - soon the weather unfolds;
  • Mushrooms in the forest you will not find - the winter will come warm.

On October 14, Orthodox around the world celebrate an important holiday - the day of the Intercession of the Virgin, with which many signs are also associated. The ancient Slavs connected the day with the appearance of the Virgin Mary to the parishioners of the Constantinople church during the siege of the city by invaders. In the Middle Ages for the feast, unmarried girls organized gatherings and guessed fortified wives. The peasants Pokrov Day meant the completion of autumn work, the beginning of preparation for the winter. It was from that day that they began to heat the stoves in the huts, spin the wool and weave the cloth.

Signs are a transfer from one generation to another of the accumulated experience of the people. It is known that the culture of each nation has its own superstitions and omens. Their appearance was of great importance for the people's residence and faith. Thus, the autumn signs of the Slavs, Jews and Muslims, for example, could differ significantly, although they tell about the same time.
