The meaning of the expression "do not cherish the soul"

The phraseology of the "soul does not cherish" appeared in Russian a few centuries ago. This turn is not only actively used in colloquial speech, but also occurs in classical literary works. Not knowing its meaning, it is easy to misunderstand the essence of what has been said or read. So, what does the person who uses this stable expression mean, and where did it come from?

"Souls do not grieve": meaning

The obsolete verb "to grin" is not familiar to the ear of modern man, since it has not been used for a long time. It is not surprising that the speech turnover of the "soul can not be cherished" may seem strange and even meaningless to someone who does not know its meaning.

Remembering the value of a stable expression is easy, because it is one. Expression means strong affection, love, trust in someone: children, parents, husband or wife, and so on. It is understood that a person is so disposed to someone that he sees in him some virtues, unconsciously ignoring the shortcomings.

Interestingly, in the role of objects of love can act not only people, but also, for example, pets. Whereas with respect to inanimate objects such an expression is not used. We can not say, for example, that the girl does not like the soul in this dress, even if she really likes it and she always wears it.

Positive and negative meaning

As a rule, the phraseology "the soul does not cherish" is used in a positive sense. Let's say a mother, admitting the adoration she feels for a single child, can say that she literally does not like the soul.

However, the phrase, in which this speech construction is present, can theoretically contain both reproach, claim, discontent. For example, the speaker is not happy with the fact that someone loves too much, although the object of love does not deserve it. Or, let's say, he does not like someone's excessive obsession with the object of love. Speech rotation in a negative sense can be used when it comes to a disobedient, ill-bred child who is overly pampered by loving parents.

Also, the expression can be used to describe a love that has long been in the past or even developed into hatred. Suppose, we can say that the brothers of the soul did not see each other until they began to divide the parental inheritance, which led to a conflict.

Origin

It is also interesting to know the origin of the phraseology "do not cherish the soul." The meaning of this speech structure is explained above, but where did it come from? To understand this, it is necessary to first understand the meaning of the obsolete verb "to sail." Once this word was actively used in colloquial speech, mostly it was loved by representatives of the lower strata of the population. It happened from the ancient verb "chati", which had disappeared even earlier, which meant "thinking, believing, expecting."

Many philologists, reflecting on the origin of the expression "the soul does not cherish," came to the conclusion that there could not have been without the word "smell." In the old days this verb was very popular, it meant "feel". It is likely that it is the confusion of the verbs "to smell" and "to smell" that led to the emergence of phraseology, a particle "not" in it took on an intensifying role.

Use in the literature

As already mentioned, not only in colloquial speech, this original speech construction occurs, the origin of which still remains the subject of heated debates. The turn of the speech was liked by many famous poets and writers, who often used it in their works.

Leafing novels, novels and short stories written in the 18th and 19th centuries, reading poems created during this period, people regularly meet the firm expression of "not showering souls." The meaning of phraseology is not different from the one in which it is used in the speech of our contemporaries. For example, speech turnover can be found in the story of Ivan Turgenev's "Noble's Nest". The author writes that "Marya Petrovna did not have a soul in him", it was trying to describe the strong love of the character. Melnikov-Pechersky uses it in the work "Grandmother's Stories", whose character says that "the father and mother of the soul did not see in their only daughter Nastenka."

Synonyms-phraseological units

Of course, the original speech turnover can easily be replaced by a variety of synonyms, suitable in meaning. It can be not only words, but also expressions. Suppose, from the point of view of value, the construction "to love without a mind" is appropriate. This phrase does not mean at all that someone literally deprived someone of reason, made crazy. So they say, when they want to describe a strong feeling that plunges a person into a state of enthusiasm, adoration.

In the role of a synonym, the speech turnover "the light with a wedge" has also come together. Using it in relation to someone, a person actually says: "I do not have souls in it." What does it mean "the light fell on a wedge"? Of course, we are talking about a strong love, which makes one see only positive aspects in the elect, excludes the possibility to exchange it for someone else.

Another synonym, which, if desired, can be used instead of the stable expression "the soul does not cherish", considered in this article, is to "fall in love without memory". This speech construction has nothing to do with amnesia, traditionally used to describe a strong love.

Interesting fact

In colloquial speech, many well-known phraseological units are often used in a somewhat modified state. Often, the value that is invested in them also changes. This fate and this speech turnover did not pass. During informal communication you can hear how the interlocutor says: "I do not have a cup of tea." The meaning of this expression is absolutely not related to love, adoration, trust, admiration. By using it, the speaker means that he does not have an answer to the question posed to him. Often this turn of speech is used when a person wants to show that he is tired of asking and even of communication, he wants to say: "Leave me alone."

Synonyms of this design, which managed to acquire great popularity among the people, look like this: "I have no idea", "without concept", "I do not know in my heart". Of course, in dictionaries and reference books the design "in the shower is not tea" is missing, because it's wrong to say so.
