State of Alabama USA: photos, cities, center, capital

The state of Alabama is located in the southeastern part of the US and borders Georgia, Tennessee, the Gulf of Mexico and Florida. Also, its western border runs alongside the Mississippi River. What else should you know about this part of America, and what can it be of interest?

brief information

The state of Alabama (USA) is the 13th among all the other states in its area. It also takes the second line of the rating for the volume of inland waters in its territory. By the way, despite the fact that the state's area is quite large, the population there is not too numerous. If the size of the territory of Alabama is on the 13th place, as already mentioned earlier, then by population - only on the 23rd. It is interesting that these places are called "Oatmeal Staff" - naturally, this is an unofficial name. This nickname is explained by the fact that numerous oatmeal birds live on the territory of Alabama. But this is not the only name. The state of Alabama (USA) is also called the "Heart of the South". It is interesting that the official tree is a long pine-tree, and the flower is a camellia. The official language is English, but among spoken languages there is also Spanish. The cities in the state of Alabama are not very large, the largest is Birmingham: it has about 250 thousand people.

History

The beginning of the history of the state dates back to the thousandth year before our era. At that time, of course, the name "Alabama" did not exist, but in those places where it is now located, trade was actively conducted, and various peoples lived. By the way, the name of the state came from the word Alibamu - the so-called Muskoge tribes, who for centuries inhabited these territories. If we talk about a relatively new time, then for a while Alabama was part of Georgia. But in 1819 she entered the United States. In the war years: from the outbreak of the Civil War to the end of World War II, Alabama was experiencing serious economic difficulties. All because people here are heavily dependent on the development of agriculture. However, after the end of the Second World War, the state began to show greater interest in another type of activity - heavy industry, technology and, of course, education.

Economy

The economic component of the state is quite an interesting topic. Alabama is actively investing in education, banking, medicine, and space research. Extraction of mineral resources, the manufacture of cars, factory business - all this also does not do without its financial support. The state of Alabama, I must say, is now quite strong and independent from an economic point of view - its total GDP was 170 million dollars a few years ago! And this, by the way, about 30 thousand per person. And this indicator only grows. So, for example, in 1999 this figure was slightly more than 18 000 dollars. But it should be noted that taxation in Alabama is very regressive (by American standards). About five percent is charged per person, although sometimes less, it all depends on the earnings of each individual citizen. If we talk about the sales tax, it is 4 percent. Its size can also vary depending on the city, for example, in Mobile it is 9%. And, finally, the tax on the sale of shares is 51%. By the way, Alabama is one of the few where taxes on medical services and food are still levied. So, in addition to the pluses in the form of solid earnings, there are some disadvantages here.

About the cities of the state

As already mentioned, in Alabama, not too large cities. So, for example, in the town of Tuskegee there are a little more than 11 thousand people with an area of 40 square meters. Km. There are 21,000 inhabitants in Atenes, 23,000 in Anniston, and 27,000 in Bessemer. Although, of course, like in any other state, there are medium-sized cities here, and quite large ones. In Dothan (Houston District), for example, more than 67 thousand people live. Although, despite the fact that there are not a lot of people here and it's quite quiet, tourists still come to the state with pleasure. For the most part, they are lovers of a relaxing holiday, which vanishes in everyday life. So if you want to relax and enjoy the silence, you should come to Alabama. Photos of small and cozy cities will not leave indifferent fans of seclusion.

Capital

The center of Alabama and concurrently its capital is the city of Montgomery. It is located directly on the bank of the river of the same name. The city was founded in 1817, and the city status was acquired in 1819. By the standards of Alabama, Montgomery can be considered a metropolis, as it is home to over 210 thousand people. Speaking about the national color, it should be noted that about 49% of the local population is black, about 48% - white, slightly more than one percent - Asians, and very few (about 0.3%) - Indians. It is interesting that the capital of Alabama is the center of wood processing, as well as the cotton processing industry. The computer technologies are well developed in the city - without it nowadays in any way. In the capital there is a large airport "Denneli" and the BBC. In addition, Montgomery is a large educational and scientific city. It is here from around the state go to get a good education. The prestigious universities include Huntingdon College, Troy State University Montgomery, Faulkner University and many other universities and colleges.

Sights of the capital

In the central part of the state are full of interesting places, and they should pay attention if they managed to come to Alabama. There are many of them, but I would like to note the most popular and significant ones. For example, the White House of the Confederation, located in the center of the capital, or the house of J. Davis. There is also a lot of entertaining museums named after Francis Scott Fitzgerald, or the Museum of Fine Arts, where real works of fine art are represented. And, of course, lovers of architecture will not leave indifferent the State Capitol.

Interesting places in Alabama

But not only in the capital there is something to see. If there is an opportunity, it is definitely worth to pay attention to the city of Birmingham. It is the largest in the whole state. It is there, on Mount Red Mountain, a monument to the God of Fire. This is not a fad of local residents, but a tribute to history. After all, the city is founded next to the mineral deposit - valuable iron ore and coal. In Birmingham, there is something to see - it's Japanese and botanical gardens, a zoo and much more.

Even in the state there is a city like Huntsville. This is a very special atmosphere. After all, Huntsville is a city of astronautics. Everyone who wants in a space camp can experience cosmic overloads - for this there is all the necessary equipment and simulators. But if you do not want to go anywhere, study and get acquainted with the history, but there is a desire to enjoy solitude with nature, you can just admire the local landscapes. For example, visit the park De Soto - this picturesque place is located next to the Little River in the northeastern part of the state. And in general, I must say that in Alabama there are lots of beautiful parks, reserves and beaches. It is they who attract visitors who regularly come here to rest and leave with a lot of vivid impressions and emotions.
