The Great Moliere: a short summary of "The Bourgeois in the Nobility"

Before describing the summary of "The Bourgeois in the Nobility", let us recall the history of the creation of the work. In November 1669, a delegation of Turks solemnly arrived in Paris. Louis XIV, not sparing to smite in the face, arranged a magnificent reception for them. However, neither the glittering of diamonds, nor the iridescent shine of expensive fabrics, nor the abundance of gold and silver produced even the slightest impression on the ambassadors. Naturally, the king was annoyed with this, but his anger increased a hundredfold, when it became clear that the head of the delegation was not at all an ambassador, but the most common rascal. The indignant monarch ordered Moliere, who was in his good standing, a ballet in which the fictitious delegation would be ridiculed. "It will be done, Your Highness," Moliere says respectfully. "The philistine in the nobility," however, did not arise immediately - in ten days a "Turkish ceremony" was created, demonstrated to the royal court. Convinced of the success of the play, the writer later transferred it to the stage of the Palais Royal Theater. In total, 42 performances were played during Moliere's lifetime.

"The philistine in the nobility": a summary

The plot of the comedy is quite simple: a naive and narrow-minded philistine - Mr. Jourdain - passionately in love with the exquisite aristocrat Marquise Dorimen. In an effort to achieve the love of a noble lady, Mr. Jourdain is trying to be like a representative of the nobility, but due to natural stupidity he can not do it. Wanting to become a noble, the hero refuses to Cleonte - the challenger to the hand of his daughter Lucille, and tries to extradite the girl for the son of the Turkish sultan. The intrigue is that the role of the noble husband is played by the same disguised Clemont. Describing the short content of "The Bourgeois in the Nobility", it should be noted that the plot of the play is simplified, which is not typical of the works of Moliere. This is due to the fact that the comedy was written under the order, with a strictly defined purpose - to shower the Turks with mockery.

Analysis

Most researchers emphasize that "Mesto" is not Moliere's first play, in which he allows himself to be ironic over the nobility. Already in his early works the writer relies on folklore, brings into action elements of people's humor. In addition, do not forget about the excellent education received at Clermont College. All this allows Moliere to create a truly sharp and talented satire. Describing the short content "The Bourgeois in the Nobility", I want to emphasize that in this work the author's ruthless mockery is directed at once in two directions: Jourdain in itself is not so bad - he is naive, trusting, generally benevolent. However, his obsessive desire to penetrate into an alien estate, according to Moliere, is worthy of severe condemnation. No better than the newly-made nobleman of his teacher: hired to teach the owner of music, dances and manners, they are the embodiment of rudeness, meanness and vulgarity.

System of characters

Brief description "The philistine in the nobility" includes a description of the central characters of the play. In addition to Jourdain and his family, representatives of the common people take part in the action: cunning tailors, pulling money from the owner, merry and witty servant Nicole. In addition, an important role played by the adventurer Dorant, pretending to help Jourdain, and establishing relations with the marquise behind him.
